Nicene Creed @ Mass

I know just enough Catholic stuff to be dangerous, to myself as well as others.
My bride & I have been recently attending Mass in the town we are planning on moving to. The last 2 Sundays the Creed has not been said. I thought that the Gloria is to not be prayed in Lent is this true with the Creed also… I would like to ask the Pastor about this but I would like to approach him in such a manner as to be non-confrontative or non-combative. I would like to not get off on the wrong foot, before we are even a part of the community

Either the creed or a renewal of baptismal promises must take place at all Sunday Masses, as well as solemnities.

During the end of Lent, when the scrutinies for RCIA take place, some parishes incorrectly omit the creed, using the intercessions for the candidates and catechumens as the prayers of the faithful, which is also incorrect.

No, I think the creed is optional with the scrutinies. The RCIA book gives specific instructions, which I think overrule the general instructions of the GIRM. Here is an answer I have posted before:

From the 2002 General Introduction to the Roman Missal (GIRM) approved for the USA, which can be accessed from romanrite.com/girm.html :

“68. The Creed is to be sung or said by the priest together with the people on Sundays and Solemnities. It may be said also at particular celebrations of a more solemn character.”

The 2002 Roman Missal’s Order of Mass, n. 19, allows either the Nicene or Apostles Creed at any Mass. (Missale Romanum, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 2002, ISBN: 8820972719, page 513).

The Creed is optional when there are the Scrutinies, (prayers for the elect who are to be baptised a few weeks later.) From the book Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: “… then, if required, the profession of faith is said. But for pastoral reasons these general intercessions and the profession of faith may be omitted.” (RCIA, n. 143, 157, 164 edition for Australia and England, n. 156, 170, 177 in the editon for the USA.).

The usual time for the Scrutinies is the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent. But it can be done at other times during the year, except Solemnities. (USA RCIA, n. 146, Australia RCIA n. 133).

I agree in formality and disagree in spirit.

I will agree with you that I was incorrect in insisting on the requirement, but I disagree with the loose requirements for “pastoral reasons”.

But since I am not a priest, my opinion doesn’t much matter in the situation.

if the scrutinies and exorcisms for the catechumens were done, along with the intercessions for them, the Creed and Prayer of the Faithful may have been skipped. they are presented with the Creed during their RCIA class the following week.
