How about “The Shinto hymn” for “When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun” (the second part of “Let us break bread together on our knees”?

By the way, who’s this woman called Grace, who is amazing?
Actually, I have fragrance from philosophy that is called 'Amazing Grace". I also own it in Pure Grace and Baby Grace. Great-smelling stuff that does not give you a migraine!👍

When I was a young boy and a protestant at the time there was one I renamed from “Lord like the Publican I stand” to “Lord like the Pelican I stand”

I think Gather Us In is my most hated hymn.

When I was in university, we used to sing this - though I like the actual hymn.

On Jordan’s Bank the Baptists cry,
If I were one than so would I.
They never drink, they have no fun.
Thank God I am an Anglican!

*This thread is bordering on tasteless… well I might as well push it over the edge. *

I absolutely cannot sing the hymn “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name” without thinking about angles with prostate problems. 😊

i found a song in the hymnal thats a dakota hymn, im assuming a song to their gods but retro fitted to take care of the plurality?

also as a child protestant i mistook the holy ghost for a holy cow in the doxology song, i dont know why…i would daydream of a cow with wings and a halo.

I had a boyhood Priest who recounted how for years when he listened to “Peace is Flowing Like a River” he couldn’t figure out why we needed to go out to the desert to set all the cactus free. 😃

“Peace is Flowing Like a River” == “Cactus Freedom Song”

No offense to Godron Lightfoot, but, “Gather Us In” sounds way too much like “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”.

You could also easily merge Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk” to “They’ll Know We are Christians”. The two sound eerily similar and could flow, one right into the other.
Every time I hear “They’ll know we are Christians by our love…” I always think “Oh,yeah? You been to a parish council meeting recently?” The implication that we were the only ones who loved also bothered me.

Actually, Cat Stevens was the one who cut Morning Has Broken. Nonetheless, it does have that sappy John Denver feel to it. Both songs do. 🤷
I don’t like Morning Has Broken, even if I know that that hymn was almost 40 years old before Cat Stevens recorded it. You see, I loathe the tune BUNESSAN. Since we usually sing “Baptized in Water” as we wait for the babies to be dressed and brought back for the Presentation of the Light and the Ephpheta Rite after their Baptism, I consider myself very lucky that we sing it to SCHONSTER HERR JESU.

“Somebody’s Knockin’ at your Door” becomes “The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Theme Song”

OK. No offence meant about the lyrics (just couldn’t resist asking a rather graceless question).

What I don’t think works is the melody when sung by a congregation. It’s a typical example of a tune that might works fine for a solo folk-singer, but sounds a mess sung by a congregation. The triplet on the “zing” of Amazing and again on the “a” of ‘a wretch like me’ are impossible for a group to sing together (and in any case are a good example of mismatching, with emphasis on non-stressed syllables), and end up sounding so slurrrrpy that you’d think you had an assembly of rather tipsy Bing Crosbys in the church.

Many post-1970 hymns too suffer badly from this transfer of a melody from a soloist with guitar (when some… some!.. of them work reasonably well) to a congregation with organ (when many… many!.. of them do not).
The only time Amazing Grace sounds good is when it’s played outside, by a piper, disappearing over a hill…😃

For some unknown reason that one has been resurrected as the Communion hymn at the anticipated Sunday Mass. I think it’s because we all know the verse and only have to change one word per verse and can sing as many words as we need. I’m thankful tht only a handful of people attend that Mass so that we don’t have to sing many verses. 😉

Reminds me of a joke. Why does a bagpiper walk whilst playing?

To get away from the sound. You may now commence with the eye rolling and deep groaning. 😃

Also, does anyone know the song that I mentioned earlier? The one that the verses sounds like “If You Want a View of Paradise” from Willie Wonka. If it helps, one of the verses is something to the effect of “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?” and the chorus is “Remember your love (or promise) and your people, Oh Lord”, which sounds sorta like an obscure Harry Chapin song. I need to find it and hear it, because I’ve had the few bits I remember stuck in my head, and if I don’t hear the whole song soon (and get it out of my head), I fear those few bits will stay that stuck for months! And I DON’T WANT TO GO CRAZY!!! So, if you can, please help a girl out!

I saw Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. Every time Scotty plays those bagpipes, I want to scream. Why play Amazing Grace? Now, whenever I hear the song, all I think of is Spock’s photon torpedo casket being shot off by Chekov and landing on the Genesis planet.

I must confess to being a fan of the pipes and have been known to do my housework to the sounds of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (their rendition of Heyken’s Serenade is my all time favorite). Only Amazing Grace and Danny Boy make me want to hurl. I would FF the tape or move the needle when those came on.

Recently I’ve been on a Celtic Thunder kick and I always skip past Danny Boy. Neither of the albums I have include Amazing Grace but if it’s on the one I’ve got on order, I’ll also skip that.

Our previous priest at the Newman Center banned Sing a New Church. Our new priest has upheld that ban and extended it to In These Days of Lenten Journey, which I think sounds like a song from A Bug’s Life.

My mother once mis-remembered the lyrics to the Galilee Song by Frank Anderson - luckily, not when she was leading the congregation in song.

The original:

So I leave my boats behind!
Leave them on familiar shores!
Set my heart upon the deep!
Follow you again, my Lord!

Mum’s version:

So I leave my nets behind!
Burn my boats upon the shore!

Ever since, it has been the “Burning Boat Song.”

Hey, let’s go easy on the pipers…yours truly being one. 😃

Scottie is actually just blowing into the bag; his fingering is off and the drones are corked. Can you imagine the shrill echos there would be through that “ejection chamber” or whatever it was if he was actually playing. It would be unbelievably loud in there.

Amazing grace doesn’t work well being sung with the pipes playing…different tempo, different emphasis on the timing. 🤷

Really, Doctor, you must learn to govern your passions. They will be your undoing!

Couldn’t resist. I have to advise people unless they want to hear me quote the dialogue for Star Trek (espeically TOS and II and IV) to never watch it with me. The first movie I was ever able to sit through was IV, The One With the Whales (also known as The Voyage Home).

That would be the torpedo bay they’re in. Also, I don’t know if it would be possible to play the pipes with just 3 fingers (and a thumb) on the right hand. James Doohan lost his middle finger in WWII.

Actually, I do like bag pipes, and I have been wanting to learn to play for several years. Just not been able to find an instructor. 😦 I guess I could learn it by myself, but it’s unlike anything I’ve learned on my own before, and I know that (learning on my own) is an easy way of picking up bad habits. I’m not concerned about the breath control, since I also play oboe (actually stopped for a few years, but starting to pick it back up again), and I imagine the embraucher would be very similar, as well.

“Lord, I Lift Your Name On High” is officially “The Blah Hymn” at our house. The melody is so “blah”, I’m so tempted to sing “Blah-blah-blah-de-blah-blah-blah” to that annoying melody.
