Nine day Novena

Hi,
As some of you might know, ive only just come back into my faith and ive got a lot to learn.
I just stumbled across something called a nine day novena.
Can somebody please explain to me what this is, as the search is not working for me when i try it.

novenas are nine days (or nine consectuive times as in hours, days, or months) of prayer in request of special spiritual favors or needs or thanksgiving for God’s gifts. There are many different kinds of novenas attached to different saints, however the oldest Novena in the church is the Novena to the Holy Spirit.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/seven.htm
