nipple stimulation to induce labor

In an effort to avoid unnecessary medical interventions during my pregnancy, I’ve been reading a lot about women’s experiences with natural birth. One suggestion that has come up a lot is to use nipple stimulation to induce labor as an alternative to drug induction methods like Pitocin or having a provider strip the membranes, etc. When a woman’s nipples are stimulated, it releases oxytocin which can cause contractions. The books I’ve read have recommended that a pregnant woman can do this by herself, or have a husband or midwife help, or use a breast pump.

My initial reaction to this idea was one of discomfort. But I’m not clear on whether it just makes me squeamish or if I’m reacting the way I am because it’s striking a moral chord. I understand what the Church teaches about the deliberate stimulation of genital organs for sexual pleasure as being gravely disordered, and this is why masturbation is wrong, even when the purpose is to obtain a sperm sample, for example. So on the one hand, I know stimulating breasts can bring sexual pleasure and that this has a place within the context of sexual intercourse. At the same time, breasts aren’t genital organs and they have as their primary purpose the feeding young children. The fact that nipple stimulation can cause contractions seems to be by design, because in the postpartum days, nursing an infant helps shrink the uterus back to it’s pre-pregnant size.

Given this, is it moral to engage in deliberate nipple stimulate outside of the context of intercourse to induce labor?

I think it’s extremely weird to have a midwife do it, and definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable to have myself or my husband do it either (for the purpose at hand).

Morally I don’t see a problem with it though.

Depends who’ doing it.😉 I dont think it has anything to do with sin. In fact, much less than the drug options.

With my wife, i tried to be considerate of her choice. I tried to influence her toward natural without epideral. She agreed and prepared for it. In the end, Brasil is very pushy for c-section and they won over. But we never heard about this method. I’ll bring it up to her. My impression is with the kind of physical stress going on, it would be to no avail, but maybe not.

When I saw the title of your thread - I did not think it had anything to do with a sexual content. Stimulating the nipples is simply a way to work with the body to possibly induce labor - it is not about sexual stimulation.

However, if you believe the nipple stimulation may become cause for sexual arousal, you can engage in sexual intercourse with your husband. (Unless your doctor or midwife saw a need for you not to engage in sexual intercourse.) Intercourse may stimulate labor to begin.

I would think of it more along the lines of simulating breastfeeding, not anything sexual. That said, why would anyone want to do this? The only way I would want to try to induce my labor is if I had a medical problem that made it risky for me to continue my pregnancy. In which case, I’d need medical intervention anyway. I’m all about natural birth but people are always trying to find so-called “natural” ways to push it along. God knew what he was doing when he designed labor and birth.

I’ll be frankly honest here. If you’re at the point in pregnancy that you or your husband are fiddling with your nipples to bring on contractions then I highly doubt you will feel any bit of sexual pleasure from the nipple stimulation. I did this to try to bring on contractions when I was stalled at 6cm. It felt totally weird as my DH was doing so under a sheet with the doula present but I was so ready for my daughter to just get here already that I didn’t care what technique we tried. I don’t see this as being a moral issue at all.

I nursed through my last pregnancy. Nipple stimulation will only bring on labor when your baby is ready to come out. If you’d like to try it to bring on labor, get a breastpump. I personally see no way possible how someone could get sexually excited from pumping. It is not sinful to do this to try to bring on labor.

Try some raspberry leaf tea as well.

Nipple stimulation may trigger some mild contractions but like someone else has said, it will not work if the baby is not ready. I heard the analogy that induction is like turning on a faucet. If the water supply isn’t hooked up, no water will come out when you turn on the faucet. When you’re pregnant, induction won’t work unless the baby is ready; home induction methods will help to jump-start labor if your baby is ready to be born. A breastpump would work well for that.

However, intercourse is even better. 🙂 The prostaglandins they give in the hospital to induce labor has derivatives of pig semen. Semen can ripen the cervix; sex and female orgasm can cause contractions. Real raspberry leaf tea (not so much the kind you buy in bags from Yogi Tea or other brands) can cause contractions as well.

Good luck 🙂

Just regular sex works.

If you’re cleared for it from your OB or midwife…you can do all the nipple stimulation you want from your husband!

Nothing immoral about that. 🙂

I think you are way over thinking this one.

I absolutely agree that God designed our bodies and the labor process well. I’m not thinking so much of the anxious first time mom who just wants to be finished being pregnant or speed things up. But over 20% of labors are induced by drugs. If a woman hears her doctor say that the baby should be born soon, I think it’s reasonable to both a) trust that the doctor is right and b) consider natural alternatives to drug inductions if it’s not an emergency. One of the examples I frequently read about is for women whose water breaks before they start feeling contractions. Because the amniotic sac protects the baby from infection, a lot of providers will want to induce labor if it doesn’t start on its own after a set period of time. Some providers will want to induce after 12 hours, others 24. I could easily see how someone in this situation might be anxious for alternatives to Pitocin.

Meh. It still seems like a reasonable question to me. Sex isn’t advisable when labor has stalled or the water has broken already. The actual situation which prompted my question was when I was watching a home birth video and the mom had trouble delivering the placenta. The midwife leaned over and started rubbing her breasts to stimulate contractions. Not sure where dad was, maybe with the baby? It struck me as odd, and it wasn’t immediately clear to me whether it was something I could recommend in good conscience to a friend. Seemed like an appropriate question for the fine folks at CAF. 😉

How far along are you? Because it might be a moot question when the time comes. 😉

Regarding the sexual aspect of breasts/nipples–from a husband’s standpoint: once my wife was at the childbirth point and forever thereafter, her breasts/nipples have been anything but sexual. Rather, they were entirely functional.

Yeah, I’m not so much concerned about my pregnancy, I was just asking in general. I probably shouldn’t have framed the question the way I did.

The way I read the question…it seemed to imply wanting to induce labor to begin with (such as being really overdue or wanting contractions to begin while you are at home before you go to the hospital)…not during/after the delivery of the baby.

That was why I responded the way I did. Of course I understand that sex is not advisable while labor is already in progress and the water has broken.

I still don’t look at this as a form of pleasure. Or a form of masturbation. Quite the opposite actually. OBs do breast exams on women to demonstrate how she can do it and to see if they can identify anything problematic. My OB has done a breast exam on me before and I never saw it as anything different then a medical procedure. 🤷

I would like to think that if I was in this situation and my contractions had stopped in the middle of my delivery. My midwife would let me know what she planned on doing and why and not just reached over to grab my breast.

Yeah, me too.
