In all fairness, most Catholic Bibles (RSV-CE, RSV-2CE, JB, NJB, NAB, NAB-RE) all have “presence” rather than “person”. It’s a matter of scholarly opinion. While “person” is probably the most ancient tradition (and is found in the Douay-Rheims), this isn’t a fatal flaw.

I think the problem is more with the footnotes to the NIV than with the actual text. Now, if you want a really, really bad Bible translation that goes directly to “God is my buddy, Jesus is my BFF”, then you’re talking about the Good News Bible, which is truly “kindergarten theology” of the most execrable variety.

The various RSV versions are “Catholicized” protestant translations - yet, we have seen revisions, as we also have with the NAB. It is a shame that, as far as the updating on the Confraternity (CCD) bible had advanced, it seems to have been torpedoed by Pope Pius XII, who wanted a new translation based on the original languages.

Truthfully, I much prefer the “Catholicized” protestant RSV-2CE to the NAB or the NAB-RE. The Church is capable of much better. It should not be as difficult as it is to demonstrate Catholic doctrine using a Catholic bible - the RSV is the only one that matches the “Hail, Mary” prayer! And, we are pretty much limited to the bible when presenting the faith to other traditions.

As to the GNT, have a look at John 2:4 (the wedding feast at Cana):

It is not even worth burning.

You know the sad part? When I made my First Communion, they gave us the choice of getting a Bible, or a prayer book. Since I already had the prayer book they were offering, I chose the Bible. And I got a Good News Bible without the deuterocanon.

I also prefer the RSV-2CE, among the modern versions. I do like the language of the Jerusalem Bibles, but I also recognize their translation issues.

The NIV’s language is actually not as good as the RSVs. In fact, when dialoguing with Protestants, the RSV-2CE or ESV are good choices.
