Is there an occasion in November in which there will be no Alleluia or Gloria? During choir practice they discussed it being omitted. Apart from Advent beginning in late November I do not know what it could be. However, we do have a former Bishop arriving on 9 November. Could that be the reason? I am still learning things as I am a new Catholic!

Thanks,

November 2, All Souls Day, falls on a Sunday this year. The Ordo doesn’t mention that the Gloria be prayed that day. All other Sunday Masses in Ordinary Time include the Gloria. However, November 30 is the 1st Sunday of Advent so the Gloria will be omitted, but the alleluia will still be sung or recited.

There is no Gloria on All Souls Day. I never heard that there is to be no Alleluia. That only occurs during Lent.

There’s a strange rubric that says if the Alleluia is not sung, it may be omitted. It’s in the GIRM.

I’ve never understood that.
On the one hand, we cannot decide to “just omit” the Alleluia, because it’s part of the Mass.
On the other hand, if we decide “not to sing it” then it can be omitted. 🤷

The “no Gloria” days would be All Souls (the Gloria is not done in Masses for the Dead) and the 1st Sunday of Advent (no Gloria during Advent).

November 9 will be the commemoration of the Archbasilica of St John in Rome. That’s the pope’s cathedral, and as such it’s the cathedral of the universal Church*. That commemoration takes precedence over the Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Given both the day and the visiting bishop, Nov. 9 will likely be more solemn rather than less.

I hope your guest will be a retired bishop rather than a former one. 😉

  • It’s a common misconception that St Peter’s Basilica in Rome is the Pope’s cathedral.

Touché. I knew when writing the question “former” just didn’t sound correct! Thanks for the clever correction.

II can not see how the Alleluia could be omitted if it is sung. 😃

How can one not possibly follow this simple instruction? 🙂

In Advent, the Gloria is not sung but the Alleluia will be sung.
In Lent, both Gloria and Alleluia are not sung.
In Masses for the Dead, the Gloria is not sung but the alleluia is sung.

In Masses for the Dead, the Alleluia is optional.

Ok, I missed something something somewhere. We sang the Gloria last Sunday. I just went and checked my missal for that day and the Gloria is there for All Souls Day. Can you please give me source or reference for this?

Mistakes happen.

Misprints happen.

It’s in the GIRM.

The Gloria is a part of the Mass that is only added on the days specified. If the Gloria is not specified, then it’s not done. *

The Masses for All Souls Day are Masses for the Dead.

Masses for the Dead are not Masses in which the Gloria is done (see above).

Therefore, the Gloria is not done in the All Souls Day Masses.

  • There is provision to add the gloria on days special to the local community, but that’s not germane to the thread.
