I just found out my church is NOT Having a mass on Aug 15. They are having a vigil mass on august 14. I have to work that eveining and I am so disappointed that there will be no mass for me on the 15th.

I can’t believe a church would not have mass on the ACTUAL day!😦

Yep, I can believe it. We are very lucky this year; our son that lives in Canada has bought us train tickets to come for a visit. He is taking us to the High Mass on August 14th at Holy Family in Vancouver, BC and again for the High Mass on August 15th.

We really love going to FSSP parishes.

There is probably a very good reason. Are there any other catholic churches nearby?

Are you in a country where it’s not a Holy Day of Obligation? That might be why there’s no Mass celebrated that day.

The reason there is no mass is probably because the obligation to attend Mass this year has been abrogated since the Aug 15 falls on a Monday. When a holy day of obligation falls on a Saturday or Monday, except for Christmas and Immaculate Conception, then there is no obligation to attend mass.

I think they should have one for those who wish to attend. Our parish is having three masses on that day even though we are not obligated to have any we have our regular two morning masses and since we have a number of visiting priests we were able to add a noon mass.

In our diocese, the obligation is not abbrogated but the feast is moved to the day before - the Sunday.

I guess I’m lucky. My parish has 2 daily masses (M thru F): 1 at 8 AM., the other at 6 PM. Although the Diocese of New York will celebrate the Asumption on Sunday, the 14th, It will also be celebrated with Mass on Monday, the 15th.

It would help to know where you live. I think in the US because it’s a Monday the precept is removed and its not a holyday of obligation. In England, when a holyday of obligation falls on a Monday it’s transferred to the Sunday. So, this year in England the Vigil of the Assumption will be on Sat 13 Aug. The Assumption will be on Sun 14 Aug. Mon 15 Aug will be an ordinary weekday this year.

I thought you’re coming to my parish when you come over here.

I had no idea it was removed as a holy day this year. I assumed it was as normal, but being in the USA, I forgot about the rule about the day of the week it falls on if its a holy day or not.

If I do have the chance to attend an evening Mass for the day, I will due to my schedule at work.

Take a vacation and come to my area. The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson, Oh, is having their annual Assumption Pigrimage. It’s a triduum of events on Fri, Sat, and Sun., including Maronite, Roman (both EF and OF), and various Byzantine Liturgies. A Pontifical Liturgy each evening with a candlelight procession. There is Confession, Stations, and spiritual talks.

And you can top it off with a hayride and a petting zoo. (This is a family affair).🙂

I am hoping to attend some of these liturgies. East and West together on one weekend in honor of Our Lady. Awesome.

If you’re in the USA then you’re lucky there’s even a vigil Mass since the holy day falls on a Monday its not a day of obligation. Most parishes in New England are not having a vigil and are having just the regular daily Mass on Monday.

Does your parish not offer daily Masses? Even if there aren’t additional Masses on that day I would expect the normal weekday Mass time.

If you have an eastern Catholic church in your area, it should have a Divine Liturgy on that day. Dormition (Assumption) is a major feast preceeded by a penitential season.

this is definitely the place to be on the Feast of the Assumption if you can make it, if you are anywhere in the Western Reserve or even Western PA around Sharon.

you can skip the hayride etc if that is not your thing

I got the dates wrong–It’s on Sat., Sun., and Mon–the actual date of the Assumption.

Definitely something worth it.
