No Catholic Bibles in Wal-Mart?

While in Wal-Mart the other day I checked out their Bible selection… There were 8 different Bibles none of which contained the deuterocanicals … mostly were different versions of the KJV or NIV.

Was this a fluke think or is there something to it? I figured Wal-Mart would have atleast 1 Catholic version available.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a Catholic Bible for sale outside a Catholic bookstore.

I’ve been noticing this for years. Perhaps it is an oversight; perhaps they did at one time but sales were poor; perhaps Catholic book publishers can’t or don’t provide the bulk quantity at prices or numbers that Walmart needs.

Perhaps you can write them and ask them and let us know if and how they respond?

I guess the 1 billion potential buyers isn’t enough for their product buyers to in interested in selling Catholic Bibles…

may ISuggest try a bookstore like barnes and noble or a store selling catholic supplies you might also try your local parish priest who might be able to tell you where to purchase a catholic bible. I have 2 but they were gifts plus one i inherated from my desceased parents Good luck and God bless

I have never seen a Catholic Bible at Wal-Mart either. I have seen some very Catholic Christmas cards though. They have also been known to sell big outdoor statues of Our Lady of Guadalupe. So they are not completely opposed to the Catholic Church.

When you consider the number of Catholics that have no idea what makes a Catholic bible Catholic, or for that matter,why it matters, the number of potential buyers isn’t influenced so much.

Wal-Mart is just about the last place on Earth that I would go looking for a Catholic Bible.

The fact is that, in North America, (a) Protestantism is the default religion; and (b) titanic retailers like Wal-Mart deal in mass market goods, and mass-market Bibles happen to be KJV and NIV Bibles (Catholic Bible publishers like Ignatius Press, TAN, the USCCB, Baronius, etc., aren’t exactly mass-market publishers… although we are now seeing more Ignatius stuff in the major chain bookstores, thanks to it being ‘the Pope’s publisher’). Protestants publish Bibles like Charmin produces toilet paper.

Ultimately, Wal-Mart has simply deduced that it isn’t worth it financially to carry Catholic Bibles. Probably eight out of every ten Americans/Canadians who will buy a Bible at Wal-Mart are looking for a KJV or NIV.

Yeah, there’s that too. I recall going to my first Catholic Mass a few years ago and asking a parishioner (introduced to me as being an active participant in the parish) which Scripture translation was being used in the liturgy. He replied, “I dunno… the King James, I think.”

Thanks… but I wasn’t actually looking for a Bible to buy (Got my own:thumbsup: )… just out of bordom while waiting for my wife I decided I would check out the selection to see what they offered… I should have known but I just didn’t realize that the Catholic Bible was such a rarity… As people have pointed out Wal-Mart seems to lean towards the cheapest mass produced of most products, and I’m sure the KJVs and NIVs meet that standard.

You can find Catholic Bible’s at the Wal-Mart website. I believe they will send it to the store you’re at if you want to buy one

I have seen one Catholic bible in Wal-mart. In Lewisville, TX, at FM 3040, there is a Wal-Mart that sells Catholic bibles. The only thing is that it is a Good News Translation/Dios Habla Hoy bilingual bible. I want to get it but I cannot afford it ($20).

It’s simple, Walmart doesn’t care whether the Bible is Catholic or Protestant. Walmart simply knows who’s buying Bibles in their stores. I’d never even think of going to Walmart to buy a Bible, and I have numerous ones.

Actually, most people in North America are Catholic (if you count Central America), Most Christians in Canada also happen to be Catholic. The United States is one of the few countries in North America that has a Protestant majority. However, you are correct to say that wal mart has decided that it is not financially viable to have a Catholic bible. Case and I point, I have six bibles (not from Wal mart), at home (I have no idea how I acquired them) and they are all Protestant.
