lisauze, I sincerely apologize if my words have caused you any distress. In attempting to explain the matter to others, I hope I did not come across as unfeeling to your situation.

I would encourage you not to let internet personalities turn you from your Catholic faith. There are some absolute nutsy people in the Anglican communion, but I know that the spirituality is the only one that really resonates with me. So I keep coming back to it, crazies and all.

I think faith is a real gift, and someone like me that has struggled with belief for decades, wouldn’t want to easily let that go.

If I may be so bold, have a little faith in yourself as well and the decision you made to become Catholic. God will somehow work things out.

I have been absolutely horrified by the lack of charity extended to you by many on this thread.
I am sorry you’ve had to even read some of these outrageous posts like someone is able to pull money off a money tree to get a car engine, take care of moving expense etc. Heck at this point I am surprised no one has thought to ask you to build your own Catholic Church and find a priest etc. GOOD GRIEF. Have some compassion people.

I have been in her shoes and the last thing one needs to feel is judgment and implications one hasn’t done ENOUGH in their opinion to rectify the situation.

Please ignore posts as such. I think part of the problem is some people are posting without having read much of the thread and don’t even know the extent of your issues making it difficult for them to understand and are posting things that appear to be uncaring in nature.

OP, you seem like a wonderful and devout Catholic hoping to get to Mass and I hope at some point your financial situation improves and you are able to by some means attend Mass again.

Blessings to you and your family this Easter.

I used to live right near ECU. There is a Catholic Church in Greenville.

Yes, and Greenville is over two hours away from Hyde County/Swanquarter. Possibly close to three. The Newman Center would be a more likely place to look for projects that reach out to isolated communities in that region of NC. The closest parish to her is in little Washington.

It’s a shame there aren’t more priests so some could travel to these communities to say mass.

Try speaking to the parish that is closest to your house. They may have parishioners that live near you that you can car pool with or give you some assistance and advice.

Catholic Mass Times

I am late to this party and I do understand what you are going through. When I first became Orthodox 10 years ago, I moved three times and each time I was over an hour away from a parish. I toughed it out for years but it does take its toll… especially when kids are involved. In the Orthodox Church, though, there is no weekly obligation. Perhaps you could talk to the priest and with his blessing make the drive once or twice a month and then watch Mass at home on our computer the rest of the time? This worked for me for awhile in the OC, but I eventually became Catholic in part because I could attend Mass more often.

I hope I’m not being redundant (I didn’t read every post). Best of luck to you!

@lisauze . First, you are in prayers. I too am in the bible belt and Baptist religion is all over. Less than 1% is Catholic here. I totally understand where you are coming from. We moved here a few years back with one uhaul trailer of items and I later found out that our ENTIRE house contents left back in storage was gone due to financial error. Nevertheless, our stuff was gone. Pictures, furniture, toys, GONE. We lived out on a mountain and to get to our home you needed a 4x4 to reach it. We were waaaaay out in the mountain woods. Well, our truck engine blew, it was our only vehicle. My husband and I separated and I was left with the kids, on the mountain, with no car. Yeah, HARD times! My boys are 11 and 12 and they tried to understand what was happening. Well Mass was not reachable because I couldn’t even get to town for groceries. I was so stressed and was trying to make the food stretch because of income was cut in half when he left plus no car. I prayed the Rosary and held on to the fact that Christ knew my pains. I made a BAD mistake then. There was a protestant preacher who said his family would come get us on Sunday for worship. I thought same as you, why not, some worship is better than none. WRONG, OH SO WRONG. Worst mistake. Ms and boys KNEW when that first service was over that this was not going to work. So I contacted the Deacon and explained. Lol, he said NOPE , you gotta come home. So he is stock rancher, raises cows, … He drove his farm truck 4x4 up that mountain for months to get us!!! I since then have moved into town, found a house I could afford, and am on the mend with my separated husband. So, just hang in there. Watch Mass on EWTN, get books to teach your child, do Catholic crafts with him, pray, and things will work out. As others have said, reach out by phone to the Diocese, and above all, know that your not alone in your struggles. God Bless!

He does understand. Serious illness is not the only accepted reason to miss Mass. Continue to pray about all of your challenges and do what is best for your family. Watch/listen to EWTN, Catholic radio, read the Mass readings with your son. Sing, also make a phone call to your closest parish. You won’t have the Eucharist, but there is a prayer you can pray to receive the Eucharist spiritually. They always share it on EWTN. I’m sorry for the misplaced suggestions from those who reacted without taking the time to read and understand your situation. I’ll be praying for your family.

The KKK is held in very low regard in most of the country. But the South isn’t like most of the country, and the KKK is still welcome in very many places.

You can watch mass on TV or online.

God does not ask us to achieve the impossible.

Your situation reminds me of Catholics living in the more rural parts of Oklahoma. Catholics are as rare as hen’s teeth over there.

No. We ended up going to a Protestant sunrise service and than watched Mass on television

I’m keeping you in my prayers and I hope you manage to work out a routine that works for your family.

The reason why Catholics are so rare in those parts is that the places had been in economic decline for more than a century. My Catholic ancestors moved to Pennsylvania - not because the people already here were less hostile to Catholicism, but because this is where the steel and coal jobs were that they sought.

The fact that some parts of the country have few Catholics shouldn’t be taken as “proof” that they are innately more anti-catholic. Its mostly just a result of economic history.

If an area is in economic decline you will see people of all denominations leaving not just selectively Catholics. If it is selectively just Catholics than it may be due to other factors other than the state of the economy.

Oklahoma is in the Bible Belt and according to people I know who are from there there is a hostility towards Catholics and other people who are not Evangelical or Southern Baptist. There is also hostility towards atheists.

A lot of the people who were in Pittsburgh when my antecedents came here were quite hostile to Catholicism too. The natives here called my family “dumb hunkies” and other names of ugliness. Some of the churches like St. Mary’s on the North Side (now a banquet hall on Pressley St.) were built with windows on an angle making them pretty much impervious to vandalism.

But they came to Pittsburgh and they stayed because this is where economic opportunity was. If the opportunities were in Oklahoma or the Bible Belt, they would have gone there instead.

I suppose if the population density is low then there will be few Catholics.
