I notice that when the Archbishop addresses **Parental and State Responsibilities **he says:

“It is the clear teaching of the Church, constantly reiterated by the Holy See, that parents are the first educators of their children. Parents have the original, primary and inalienable right to educate them in conformity with the family’s moral and religious convictions.[3] They are educators precisely because they are parents. At the same time, the vast majority of parents share their educational responsibilities with other individuals and/or institutions, primarily the school.”

The Archbishop simply states that “…the vast majority of parents *share *T… educational responsibilities…with… institutions, primarily the school.” The Archbishop does not say that “all parents are morally obligated to share educational responsibilites with other institutions.”

Throughout this entire forum, there have been so many informative links provided. But I still don’t think it is my responsibility (nor do I have the ability) to assimilate all this information and derive my own conclusions.

Then make a call to the chancery office. Tell them you are clarifying a matter (You do not even have to tell them your name if you choose not to do so). Tell them that your pastor insists that all Catholic parents are morally obligated to put their children in Catholic schools. Ask them if this is so, and if so, where can you find the documentation in canon law.

Simple.

It almost sounds to me like the priest is trying to use the fear of heaven/hell to extort and “drum up business”.

By any chance, in a previous career, would he often utter the phrase “you need a jukebox”?

As for my reasoning ability - yes, it is limited, although I do thank God for the bit I do have. I’ve just found this whole process very enlightening, in my limited way. I’m surprised at how many people reference the CCC or canon law, or some other document and say very confidently “…it says right here…it’s very clear…of course it’s obvious…”. I just never realized that as Catholic laity we are to each read and interpret all the documentation surrounding an issue such as this and then rationally draw our own conclusions!

It’s out there right on the US Bishops’ web site for all to use: Scripture, the CCC, etc. And the Vatican web site has the Code of Canon Law of 1983, as well as encyclicals, etc. Help yourself!
