No Communion until absolution?

No gritting it out- I’m 60,and it’s comforting to know that there are still priests that truly care and not just trying to rush people through Confession- It’s a small TLM church, and I love it.

Very sporadically, because I honestly cringe every time I have to sit through the Novo Ordo, so I just started going to this TLM church 24 miles away. I’m 60 years old,and now feel that I’m home again.

The Ordinary Form of the Mass is just as valid as the Extraordinary Form. To cringe at a valid mass, well, that makes me very sad.
Not just give me a few Hail Mary’s and send me on my way, like most do nowadays.
Remember, our Father is generous in mercy. Often the penance is light for the worst of sins. We ought not speak ill of pastors who assign light penances.

To each their own, but the TLM is what I remember as a kid, and I totally disagree with eucharistic ministers, altar girls, receiving Holy Communion in the hand, etc., and light penances don’t benefit anyone.

You’re a brave soul to go confess at a TLM church. I’m a few years younger than you and I have been confessing 1 to 3 times a month for the last 3 and a half years since I decided to get right with God, and I’m still too chicken to go to one of those priests. I had a lot of anxiety about confession for many years so I need the nice easy priests. It’s interesting though, one priest yelled at me once about 6 months in for committing a serious sin and it scared me so bad I haven’t done that sin since. Unfortunately the priest was accused of something pretty bad himself and sent out of the country (it was in the papers). I pray for his soul.

I forgot to mention the proper dress- Females NEVER wear veils in any Novo Ordo Mass that I’ve been to.

Any priest that allows you take Communion unworthily doesn’t care and isn’t doing his job. I totally respect my Confessor.

It’s acceptable to not wear a veil (unless one chooses to do so).

priest would not grant absolution until several changes were made in my life as part of my penance, such as attend Mass for the next four Sundays.

It sounds like he has made absolution dependent on completing the penance. He shouldn’t do that.
Once again, it’s not a penance. He asked the man to make several changes in his life.
One of them is attend Church for four Sundays. Sunday Mass is an obligation - it cannot be a “penance”.
Are you quite sure of that? Citation?

According to the OP the priest himself described the four Sundays as “part of my penance”.

I personally know some ladies who wear a veil regardless of whether they are at a TLM or the Ordinary Form Mass.

A whole lot of changes became “acceptable” after Vatican 2 to make people happy.

Maybe i was wrong- His main points were that I needed to end sexual relations with the lady that wasn’t my wife, get rid of the alcohol in the house, since we were abusing it, and stop watching porn.

How exactly is a Sunday Mass for which you have an obligation “penance”? Penance is something extra you do for the Lord. It’s not doing something you’re required to do whether you’ve sinned or not.

Not at all. He did exactly what he was supposed to do-Not just give me a few Hail Mary’s and send me on my way, like most do nowadays.
Congratulations on coming home! And you have my admiration for your attitude toward this penance. Feeling as you do, I don’t think you’ll have any problem settling back into the Church.

The OP certainly doesn’t seem to be working on the disdain portion of his disposition much. There’s no call for belittling a form of the Mass, priests who are giving valid penances, and the actions of others that are perfectly reasonable and licit simply because they don’t align with one’s own preferences.

Actually, if you really remember the Mass from childhood, they were probably wearing hats. And since head coverings are not required, perhaps best not to be criticizing the women who are not wearing them —but who are showing up for Mass.

The OP has clarified maybe the priest didn’t say it was a penance. I’m happy to leave it there. I don’t know one way or another on whether an obligation can be assigned as penance (although it’s obviously unusual, if it is valid) - I was just following the OP’s original statement where he said that absolution would be deferred until he completed a “penance”, which specifically included the four Sundays.

The priest did not say that attending the next four Sundays was part of the penance. He specifically said to stop watching porn, stop having sex with my gf, and to remove all alcohol from the house, since me and my gf have a problem with it.
