Can the Gloria be left out during Mass? During Mass, it was obvious our Priest was sick and not feeling well. He could have just forgot it. Thanks, Tim
It does. The Gloria is recited on Feasts and Solemnities of which the Chair of St. Peter is one (a Feast)The Gloria is to be sung/recited; however, the Gospel Acclamation cannot be Alleluia; it must be one of the Lenten forms. I may be wrong on this, but the Feast of the Chair of Peter might count as an occasion when the Gloria is sung/recited. This falls on February 22nd and is a huge feast at the Vatican, for obvious reasons. As I said, these dates are dependent on whether or not they fall during the Lenten season.
Thank you, AJV. I thought for a minute I was going to be a font of misinformation on this issue. If memory serves, I think Ash Wednesday is coming early this liturgical year, so I guess we will be having the Gloria for the Feast of the Chair of Peter during Lent.It does. Yes, Ash Wednesday is February 6.Thank you, AJV. I thought for a minute I was going to be a font of misinformation on this issue. If memory serves, I think Ash Wednesday is coming early this liturgical year, so I guess we will be having the Gloria for the Feast of the Chair of Peter during Lent.
The ‘Alleluia’ is an expression of unestrained joy and happiness, as is the ‘Gloria’ as well. As such they are considered not to fit in with the more restrained and penitential atmosphere of Lent and Advent. Why no “Alleluia” song during Lent before the Gospel reading? Just what is the explanation behind this historical tradition.
Thanks,
Keith
Because they are confused. Why do some parishes not put holy water in fonts to sign ourselves with during Lenten season?
Actually, St. Joseph is moved to Saturday, 15 March this year. It is most unusual to see it transferred to a date before its normal celebration.During Lent, the Gloria may be sung/recited during:
Saint Joseph’s Day: March 19th (moved to the 17th this year because it fell during holy week)
The Chair of St. Peter: February 22nd
