I have a question. I was married a long time ago (1973), it only lasted 4 volatile years and since then had the first marriage annulled. 21 years ago, I met and married a wonderful person (also Catholic and divorced), and this person promised to get his first marriage annulled also so that we may repeat our wedding vows in the Catholic church. When we got married in 1988, we were married in a park by a minister. This is all very vague to me now, but the fact was, we purposely chose a holy minister instead of a judge because we wanted to recite our vows in front of God.
All this time, I had been receiving the Eucharist. Somehow, I felt that since we have had a good, strong marriage and we both believe God helped us find one another due to a long string of events, we were forgiven for our first divorces and were given a fresh start. I recently found out (after going to confession for something else) that I had NO businss receiving communion, nor will I be able to, until my husband gets his first marriage annulled. Even though we are now at the age that we are pretty much cellibate.
My husband no longer wants to go through the paperwork and pain of revisiting all the past events that lead him to being divorced by his first wife, (he wanted children, she did not). They divorced after struggling for 3 years. I had 3 children from my first marriage and my husband and I never conceived any of our own, which also brings us to thinking that God put us together.
If he does not wish to get his first marriage annulled, but my first marriage is annulled, can I receive Holy Communion? I have felt so empty without it.
