No hymns?

I just went to my first Mass ever today, and I was a little disappointed that there were no hymns sung during the service. Is that normal? I was so surprised because I’ve heard some fantastic Catholic hymns on the radio, and I was really looking forward to hearing them in person. Are hymns only sung on holidays or during special services?

And while I’m on the topic of music… One song that I heard on EWTN radio that really moved me was the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Does anyone know the artist and where I might be able to buy that rendition of the piece? I can’t get it out of my head! It was just so beautiful. Thanks for your help. 🙂
 
Was it a very early Mass? Our 8.00 am Mass is a ‘Silent Mass/Low Mass’ without any hymns, but at the 9.30 am Family Mass and the 11.00 am Mass we do have lots of hymns and the organ/choir. Maybe that explains it.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a prayer, which can be sung, and was revealed to Sr Faustina Kowalska by Our Lord in the 1930s. It’s usually prayed on the beads of a rosary. ‘Google’ ‘Divine Mercy’ and a whole bunch of info will come up, hope that helps 😉

Thanks, I know that it’s a prayer, but I would LOVE to have the musical rendition on CD. 👍 I just don’t know who the artist is and where to find it. I even tried BearShare, but it wasn’t the same rendition as I heard on EWTN. I hope someone has some information about it. I might have to get out the old cassette recorder and tape it from the radio if I can’t find it!
 
I’ve not heard the one on EWTN, but the sung chaplet that I absolutely resonate with is the one played on KBVM each day. It’s sung by Donna Cori Gibson and is available through her website donnacorigibson.com/music3.htm

You can listen to a clip there and see if it’s the same one.

Is the Weekend one the one that is ‘led’ by a man and 2 women? The man is kneeling in between the 2 women, I believe.

Actually, both are. But one is a man with his two daughters, and one is and African American man and two women, and that is the one you want. The father and daughters are played during the week at 3:00 EST on EWTN and the other on the weekends. The weekend one is just much more soulful, just a richness that is almost etherial.

If it says sung by STILLWATERS, that is NOT the one you want!

The Donna Cori Gibson is the one with a Black man and two women accompanied by piano. It is exquisite. EWTN has it on their site, or it’s also available at the site someone else posted. Whoever said “You can’t get it out of your head” is right. It makes me weep, it’s so beautiful.

Yes - thank you this is the one I love too. It is so beautiful. When was it made, do you know the year? I keep wondering if they are going to update these, but I hope they never get rid of this one!
I love seeing the priests in the congregation praying, too.

I’ll have to get back to you on that date. I have it out in my car. I listened to it today, just so happened it was at 3:00 so I was in sync with the rest of the world, for a first ever!

It makes me cry everytime, then I think “oh no, one of these days I’m gonna wreck my car out here, crying and singing the Divine Mercy”. But then I think “maybe my guardian angel is paying special attention right now, knows how emotional I get over this stuff!”.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy and it is a real blessing to you! 🙂
