No illegitimate son can be a priest?

Is it true that an illegitimate cannot be a priest? Or was it true at one time?

I have asked this in the “Ask an Apologist” forum but I have received no answer.

Canon Law did have this prohibition at one time (which was dispensable) but the current code of canon law does not contain this prohibition.

Some follow up questions…
  1. Does anyone know the reasoning behind not allowing illegitimate sons to be priests?
  2. Does the SSPX still follow the prohibition that illegitimate sons cannot be priests?
 
Illegitimate is a man-made classification anyway. If God didn’t want someone here, that person wouldn’t get born.

In Australia here prior to V2 and the changes, one very large Irish founded religious order of sisters did not allow aboriginal women or part aboriginal women to enter. But then at one point in our not too distant past we had that dreadful “White Australia Policy”. This exclusion from that Order has now been amended to welcome aboriginal and part aboriginal women seeking to enter.

Sounds like the influence of Deuteronomy 23 to me.​

Whilst I entirely agree that an illegitimate child should not bear the sin of their parents’ actions, I’m sure that you’ll accept that the mother is not the only guilty party. As they say, “it takes two to tango”. The father is as equally responsible as the mother.

Yes, any young man should be able enter if he has been called by the Holy Spirit This is my opinion. I do not know the rules of this vocation, but I know the Lord forgives those who call on His name.
However, the sins of the mother or the father are not to be paid by the son.

Excuse me if I am wrong, but I have been led to believe that Erasmus of Rotterdam was an illegitimate son who became a priest. His father eventually became a priest also…any comments on this…:hmmm:
 
There is a seminary in my state that requires the marriage certificate of the applicant’s parents as part of the application process. I don’t know if my parents are married or not.
