Today during Good Friday service, my parish eradicated the custom of the congregation to queue up and venerate the cross by kissing, and replaced it with mass adoration of the crucifix being exposed.

Is this normal?? Is this acceptable?

It’s not the norm but it is an option depending on the situation. This is what the Congregation for Divine Worship’s 1988 instruction Paschale Solemnitatis - The Preparation And Celebration Of The Easter Feasts says:
  1. The cross is to be presented to each of the faithful individually for their adoration since the personal adoration of the cross is a most important feature in this celebration; only when necessitated by the large numbers of faithful present should the rite of veneration be made simultaneously by all present.

Then unless there was a very large crowd, I don’t understand why they’d do that.

how do you define “a large crowd”? Around how many people?
That term is usually interpreted by the Pastor. I don’t think the Church foresees anyone defining it as a couple of hundred people, but then, I don’t think the Church foresaw anyone defining 50 people as a large number requiring an EMHC to help with Communion either.

In better news, you are free to kiss your personal crucifix in the privacy of your home. Daily even.
Many cultures do that. Be at peace.

I often kiss my fingers and touch them against my crucifix before I leave my home in the morning. It’s also how I venerate the cross on Good Friday.
