No Longer Catholics Marrying Protestants

My dad was one of them. That was a common understanding and what many Catholics were taught for so long. However, it was never an official teaching of the Church. That was a big question I had to deal with once I realized and accepted that the original true church was and still remains Catholic…the Unversal Church of Christ that all Christians subsist in whether they like it or not. Can you imagine an eye of a blind man saying it’s not part of the body? Just because it doesn’t realize it’s a part of the body doesn’t make it any less a part. It exists within the body of Christ yet it exists imperfectly. The Catholics are supposed to be healthier, but our culture and shameful agenda driven heretics have pushed as many Catholics as far away from the true teachings as they can to try to “heal” wounds…which only makes the victims more suseptable to falling in to anti-Catholic organizations that proselytize more Catholics and thus a new viciouis cycle begins and grows. I know…I was one of those.
Sorry to hear that some were “taught” that. I was always taught not to even say Judas was in Hell. Only God knows. The moment before death, a person can repent. I was taught that if you do sin seriously, you put your soul in grave danger of dying in that state. I am over 70.

If you say so. Not sure if I agree with you on that. I see this as quite a narrow-minded way of thinking.

My story is my parents stopped doing the Catholic faith altogether, though they still pray at home. They have their reasons, including an incident with a close relatives funeral…among other things. And of course, them having grown up during that “change” to the Vatican II, and also certain changes for instance…when things were once a sin in the Catholic church, are no longer a sin now that made them leave the church. When I was in my early teens, I was witnessed to this.

My dad was law enforcement and had to “pick up” a drunken priest…yeah, I guess you could only imagine how he felt.

So you could probably understand the negative feedback I had received from my parents who simply got “Sick of it all” and left the church and, of course I grew up around that.

Even around a entire family that started leaving the church for their own reasons as well, as I stated the whole “Married a man/woman” outside the Catholic church.

So, basically, my entire family, including myself are not fully practicing Catholics.
Although we hadn’t turned into atheists or any thing either.
More victims of the “Spirit of Vatican II”.

My in laws left the Church a while over some issues during the “changes”. Its important to know that things that were a sin before 1965 were still sins after. Some people just got lost in the “spirit” and forgot or flat out denied what the Church teaches. The tenants of the faith hasn’t changed in 2000 years and can’t change. That is why we know that the Catholic Church is the one, holy and catholic (meaning universal) Church as founded by Christ.

This post is more about “marrying” outside your faith more than anything. Chances are, if I meet a Methodist woman, that won’t keep me from dating her.

And all the SINGLES ministries are Protestant based…not many actualy Catholic singles groups…not sure why. I met a woman in our singles group who was a former Catholic, asked me what my religion was, and I told her…and she said she used to be Catholic, but she didn’t go for the whole “birth control” thing, and left that for the Non-Denomniational church.
I married non-catholics twice and both became converts. My first husband became a Catholic after 6 years of marriage, He never interfered in my raising the boys Catholic. He went to Mass with us frequently and learned to love it. (Latin Mass, then) He died in an accident shortly after we celebrated our 8th Ann. 4 years later I married again to a non-Catholic and he became Catholic 2 years after marriage. We were married 18 years when he died of heart problems. I practiced my faith and they both learned from that. A few months before my 1st husband died we lost a son, born dead, and my Dr. wanted me to take the “pill” for a year. I was distraught and my priest said I could take it for a year, but my husband asked me, “Honey, if birth control is a sin, how can the priest give you permission to sin?” I said, “I don’t know.” And my husband tore up the prescription and threw it in the waste basket. Thats as close as I ever came. Priests that gave permission like that were NOT following the Church. Later I read, Humana Vite and it is beautiful, every Catholic should read it and study it. Then they should understand the Church’s teaching.

Woah…hold on there for a second…now that’s news to me.

This is what I am talking about. You get a priest that tells you one thing…then get another that tells you another thing. Seems that one hand doesn’t know what the other is doing.

So you actually didn’t listen to the priest…interesting.

I remember my dad had to eat a BLT sandwitch on Good friday back in the 60’s, because that wast he only food that his mom packed for him…and he had to say so many prayers when he went to confession.

THEN…later on…apparently eating meat, wasn’t really a sin anymore…(or was it eating meat the entire Lent season?..not quite sure)

But apparently, the point is…he wasn’t allowed to eat meat on a certain day, and then he had to do pennance for it…then later found out, they changed that rule, making it no longer a sin anymore. Did you think to discuss this decision with the priest as to why it was “okay in this case” to take BC pills?

Now you have a priest that promotes Birth Control

Priests are fallible. They are just men like everyone else and can give bad advice. That is why it is important to know what the Church teaches thought the CCC and orthodox priests.

Well, perhaps the priest knew of something that you didn’t and well, made an exception to the rule?

Abstinence is a discipline, disciplines can change. The rule for abstinence on Fridays through the year is still in effect, however in most diocese one can substitute some other form of penance or charitable work for not eating meat.

Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are still days of complete abstinence, so eating meat on that day is not allowed. That said it sounds like your fathers instance was an extenuating circumstances and probably wasn’t a big deal.

Heres the problem, some priests even today will tell you its perfectly fine to use artificial contraception (as well as other obviously immoral behaviors) and they are wrong. Humane Vitae and other Church documents clearly spell out you can never use artificial contraception. If you really want I can go look up the documents and quotes if you like.

Here is the exception. You may use medicine’s that are prescribed for contraceptions to treat other serious medical conditions. This is called the principle of double effect, again I can document this if you like.

Yes, but were said documents written by men as well and are they too, fallible?

Yes written by men, but infallible because they reflect the consistent teaching of the church for 2000 years. There is no teaching ever from the official magisterium of the Church that say contraception is morally fine.

Don’t get to excited, Tony, this was shortly after Vatican II and there was a lot of confusion at that time because of false ideas of the acceptance of the Birth Control Pill. Which was later cleared up because of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical, Humana Vite.

As for eating meat on Friday, as long as it was a Church Law, it was a serious sin to eat meat on Fri. The Church can and sometime does change or revise Her laws. “Whatever you loosed on Earth will be loosed in Heaven, Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven.” Those are Jesus’ own words to Peter. While the Church has revised its law on abstaining from meat on Friday, it has NOT done away with it. If you eat meat on Fri. then you have to substitute another sacrifice in its place. Because substitutes for meat have become so available it is not much of a sacrifice to eat shrimp or whatever, so now the Church leaves it up to us to find a greater sacrifice. The responsibility lies on our shoulders now. There are 4 Laws.
  1. God’s Law
  2. Natural Law
  3. Church Law and
  4. Civil law. The first 3 all work together, but the last one can be disastrous as we have seen in abortion etc.

Using the pill doesn’t prevent pregnancy, it kills the child moments after he is conceived.

Now, the Church does allow a mother to take medicine that will keep her from dying even if it kills the child in her womb. Such as a woman with cancer, she can take Kimo even if it kills the child. The woman cannot set out to kill the child, she just must set out to heal herself, and if the child dies then OK, but if somehow there is a miracle and the baby survives, then Alleluia! I don’t see how a priest could say it was OK to take the pill. If I had been that person I would have gone searching for Church documents, and/or contacted a really orthodox priest. On EWTN’s website they have a Q&A section where a person can get answers, and the apologist section on this forum also has great people who can answer such questions.

You see, the Church has 2000 years of history, we are so blessed to be so old, because now, no matter what the question, it would be almost impossible to come up with an original question, there is an answer somewhere in Church history.

The Church, much like the Judicial system in the USA, looks at past cases and looks at how those past cases were solved, and 99.99% of the time the Church sticks with the same answer. But if there is something that makes the situation unique or different, then the Church might give a different answer.

Tony and some others say that we are narrow minded if we say that the Catholic Church is the only sure way to heaven and that we want everyone in the entire world to be Catholic. We are just wishing the best possible life for everyone! I mean, as Christ said, if a son asked for bread would the father give him a stone? If you ask us for truth will we give you anything the the truth the full truth and nothing but the truth? Why should we if we? It is our duty as Catholics to wish for everyone to go to heaven especially our enemies, so, and since the best and only way to heaven is through the Catholic Church, it would be a sin if whe did not try to convert you to Catholicism, or try to make the Cafeteria Catholics stronger in their faith!

PS: I for one would never marry anyone who was not Catholic. I have seen too many people fall away from the faith because of it, and in other families, I have seen the children put into a tug of war situation. Also, I absolutely loved the security I have always had knowing that my parents both believed the same thing and I loved how they always supported each other when teaching my siblings and I about our faith. I would want that same secure feeling for my children, so I will never marry outside the Church.

PSS: Someone below said that they knew a deacon for a bishop who was raising his kids Orthodox. Well, it is wrong of that man to allow his wife to raise his children in the Orthodox religion. It is wrong if the bishop does not confront the man. It is wrong for the deacon to attend the Orthodox mass. YES, I did say that the bishop could be wrong! It is possible, sometimes it is even common. How do I know this? Well, I am not just a Pope follower, I have a mind, I think and learn and I know allot about my faith. Bishops are men. They can make mistakes, and for a large part of history bishops seem to have made a great deal of mistakes. The bishop here in Las Vegas is not a good bishop, the Cardinal Mahony is a BAD cardinal. I know this because I know what they do is against what the Catholic Church teaches. So, yes, Catholics can say that our bishops, cardinals, priests, deacons, are bad, and we can seek better advice from better priests, bishops, cardinals, etc… That is another of the many, many, many reasons why I love the Catholic Church. I can read and study and I can know about my faith, I don’t need to just accept what my preacher says.

I wasn’t being rude, just truthful. Catholics have been accused of that for centuries by non-catholics and it is NOT true. The Church has never taught that Catholics are the only Christians, but you have to keep in mind that for 1,500 years, Catholics WERE the only Christians,(including Orthodox who are fully Catholic), in the world. The Catholic Church teaches that anyone who is properly baptized is a Christian. In fact its really the other way around, many protestant denominations accuse us of not being Christians. What the Catholic Church actually teaches and what some, (even some Catholics), think she teaches are not always the same. One needs to study the Catholic Faith and get the TRUTH. As much harm can be done by Catholics that don’t know their faith well, as by those who try to distort the teachings of the Catholic Church.
