Well my whole phisolophy and understanding of marriage has been radically changed after reading Love and Responsibility by Pope John Paul the Second who of course references a chapter in the gospel saying there is no marriage nor is anyone in marriage in heaven… and that a marriage is dissolved once a spouse dies… so this has just sort of blown me away

any comments?

The purpose of marriage to have children and raise a family; no need for that in heaven.

i see sometimes i just wonder about what we will actually do in heaven… on earth we have to work and be together, and family is a big part of what we do, since we all get new bodies in heaven it seems a little weird that we dont have to marry in heaven but i am not god nor do i know his ways so obviously his ways are better than my understaning

That doesn’t mean you won’t be close to your earthly spouse in Heaven.

I think we do the same thing, but the family is a lot bigger.

To some people the lack of marriage just might in and of itself make for heaven! Depends on how happy their marriage was or was not while here on earth.:rolleyes:

We don’t understand how our relationships will work in Heaven. Marriage is a precursor of our union with God.

That said, I do believe that our earthly relationships will impact our heavenly life. Love matters and God will respect those He put together for a reason. It just won’t be marriage. My reasoning is that Jesus is still Mary’s son in heaven, so some sort of relationship status must remain.

The beauty and happiness in Heaven is too great for our minds here on earth to comprehend. In Heaven, we will all be like one big happy family with the angels and saints. We will see, recognize, and know eachother in Heaven. Marriage ends at death, but as long as we make it to Heaven, we will be reunited and together in Heaven with the rest of our family members and friends.

The even more shocking concept is that if one spouse ends up in heaven and the other in hell, the spouse that is in heaven will actually “rejoice” over the fact that the other spouse is in hell (because God’s will is being done).

That’s one concept that I don’t know if I will ever be able to fully wrap my head around while still on this earth…

Yep. I don’t think you yet see what the Sacrament of Matrimony truly is: a representation of something much, much greater. In heaven there is but one Matrimony: that between us, the Bride, and Him, the divine Bridegroom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. It is a great mystery, as St. Paul writes.

That does not mean that our marriage(s) on earth loose value in heaven, just like the vows of chastity or celibacy. It means that we are, so to speak, at a different level. But, as for the spouses, we know from the infallible word of God that “the two become one flesh”, thus my understanding is that there could be no separation between the spouses in heaven.

That sort of thing (to rejoice over someone else’s misfortune) is taboo here on earth. So why would it be okay in heaven? And what more misfortune is there than to be in hell for the rest of eternity?

This is not very well put 🤷 I actually thing it rests on an erroneous premise: it is never God’s will that someone be in hell. In fact, God’s will is that everyone be with Him, and it is the persons’ rejection of God in free will that determines their stance in the state of eternal separation from the Beatific Vision which we term “hell”.

In fact, someone’s presence in hell is living evidence that God’s will is not being done.

Thus, God is not happy and will never rejoice that any of his children is in the state of hell. And most naturally, neither will any member of the Church Triumphant, and especially not a spouse, rejoice that anyone (especially a loved one) is in hell.

However, there will be other reasons to rejoice, namely the presence of the living God. Do you know why nobody can see God and live? Because nobody in this life can truly grasp who God is without literally dying of joy. The saints who were very close in this understanding experienced great ecstasies of love in which they were entirely detached from the world, and they only entered these mystical experiences and survived them by God’s free grace for reasons known to Him alone.

Well, if I make it to heaven at all my spouse will be so close to the Throne and I’ll be so far away from it that it won’t make much difference anyhow.

Good, because it’s not God’s will that anyone be lost. It’s us rejecting God’s will for us and choosing hell that causes the separation. But you cannot grieve in the Presence of God, either, and you will have perfect understanding.

Oh come on now 😃 He’ll sure ask the Lord to switch places with you, and knowing Him, He’ll instead make some room and have you move forward, next to him! 🙂

If marriage ends with death, why does the love of Christ and His union with the Church portrayed as a marriage?

To quote a great Saint and doctor of the Church:

"That the saints may enjoy their beatitude more thoroughly, and give more abundant
thanks for it to God, a perfect sight of the punishment of the damned is granted them."

  • St. Thomas Aquinas
We must not think of heaven and hell in earthly terms. What is good is always defined by the fact that it is in accord with God’s will and what is evil is always defined by the fact that it is contrary to God’s will. While on earth, it is God’s will for all men to be saved, therefore to take delight in the sufferings of those here on earth would be contrary to God’s will and is evil. While on earth, the worst sinner can be transformed into a great Saint with just a single decision to repent.

That said, if a sinner chooses to be damned at the time of death, then God grants this sinner his/her wish by sending this soul into hell. While there is sadness over the loss of a soul (since it was God’s will for this soul to be saved), the torments that this soul now experiences is not at all contrary to God’s will (since it was God’s active will which cast this soul into the outer darkness).

I recognize that this is a difficult concept and it wasn’t my intention to start a heated debate over the subject. I just thought that I would put it out there for those who might be interested in understanding more deeply the differences between this life and the next (in fact, the vast majority of the differences probably will never make complete sense until we arrive there! 🙂 ).

God bless!
