Hi, I am getting married in October and we’ve chosen to have our ceremony without a mass. Could someone tell me step by step how this will go. Thank you and god bless:blush:

Hello!
I just did this!!!

First off, pick up a copy of Together for Life: A Prep for a Wedding Outside the Mass, it will give you the readings, vows, responses, etc. You and your finace choose the ones you like the best.
T and I combined some of them to get what we liked.

You will process in normally. Whether or not the priest processes in will depend on your diocese/church. My priest did not, he came out with the groomsmen.

We chose to have a gathering hymn (How Great Thou Art), but you don’t have to.

There will then be the greeting and the blessing. You will sit for the readings and responsorial psalm, then stand for the Alleluia and Gospel. Sit for the homily.

After the homily you will have the Rite of Marriage, with the exchange of Rings, Vows, etc.

After this will be the Prayers of the Faithful, the Our Father, the Sign of Peace, and then the Nuptual blessing.

All in all, about 30-45 minutes.

Your pastor or the priest or deacon who will conduct the Rite of Marriage will plan it with you. He will give you all the information about what you can and can’t do, what readings you can choose from, etc. Generally this is also provided in a general outline during the Marriage Preparation process.

Marriage without the mass is also still considered a sacrament. Often times people will confuse this when we teach them during their marriage prep that they need to be in a state of grace before getting married. They will argue that they are not going to communion because they are just having a ceremony. But Marriage is a sacrament, and you need to be free from mortal sin to partake of this holy and beautiful sacrament as well.

Check with your priest or the woman who coordinates weddings at your parish.
