"No more pain" = no more hell (eventually)

However, the exact Greek expression is: “eis aionas aionon”. The “eis” makes every bit of difference. According to my Greek-English dictionary, the form “eis aionas” means “always” or “forever”.
I agree to a certain extent, although in ancient Greek it’s a bit different: “age of the ages” is a rough translation. I just think that it can be interpreted both ways in the ancient Greek. I am no expert in ancient Greek, however. I am focused more on the prophecy of “no more pain”. Also, it doesn’t explicitly say they will be tormented, but that the smoke rises up “eis aionas”.

“Well then! This is fantastic news. Since now I know hell is temporary, I will leave in just a moment to get some drinks and cruise for prostitutes. I now no longer need to waste my time with mass, or honoring the Eucharist, or Confession. God will forgive all in the end and someday I will taste the sweet delight of heaven with the rest of the faithful. Even if hell’s torments are unimaginable I will surely reach the Perfect one thereafter and my pain will evaporate like smoke. And even if on this point I am wrong, hell’s pains are temporary?! How great is this? Even if I don’t reach heaven, the flames I will endure will vanish and i will live with the rest of my fellow sinners in peace in the caverns of hell.”

Here is something I copied from another website:

THE INFINITE DURATION BEFORE AND AFTER “TIME” PLUS THE AGES FROM CREATION TO JUDGEMENT; THAT IS, ALL AGES CONSIDERED TOGETHER: This is expressed variably as ages, age of the age, ages of the ages, etc. For example, 1Ti.1.17: “Now to the King of the ages (aionon), incorruptible, invisible, only God, [is] honor and magnificence unto the ages of the ages (aionas ton aionon)…”. In this passage “ages” (aionon) means the same thing as “ages of the ages” (aionas ton aionon). In Revelation every use of aion is “unto the ages of the ages,” as in Rev.1.18: “Fear not. I (Jesus) am the first and the last and the living [one], and I became dead. And look! I am living unto the ages of the ages (aionas ton aionon). And I have the keys of death and of [the] unseen place (hades).” This is the duration to which 0166 aionios (below) refers when it describes God as being “eternal.”

Okay dude, have fun!

You miss my point. I mean that if all creatures reach heaven regardless of how they act, then God is not just. Since God is the supreme good, if I ever reach him despite having died in mortal sin, then I win, not God. My disobedience in this case was more powerful than God’s justice. Even though I did my own thing and rejected Him even unto death, I still get to enjoy the Beatific Vision. In reality, God cannot reward the reprobate ever with anything but His justified wrath. Only those that die in His grace can obtain Heaven.

Yes, I agree that in some contexts it definitely must mean forever. However, there is a passage in Lamentations that states: “No one is cast off by the Lord forever”. Now we’d have to get into ancient Hebrew or Aramaic or whatever it was, but rather than that, my real speculation here is that there is no more pain in the very end, due to the prophecy in Revelation.

I host a website devoted to Catholic evangelism and catechesis at www.logosensarkos.com. Go to the second page (Audio-Visuals and Essays) and look at the presentation entitled “Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory” which you can download for free.

I thought you just said you were going to seek out prostitutes and go to hell, not bother me anymore on Catholic Answers. Once again, I’m not denying hell, just it’s eternal pain. I know God is just. Would the parent who fries his child without end for disobedience be just?

I have no plans to leave the Church and with God’s help I never will. I was giving you an illustration as to why God is just by allowing the pains of hell to be forever. I tell you, honestly, you are going against the teachings of Mother Church and this of Jesus when you say otherwise. Hell IS forever. I am done responding for the night. Know you are preaching heresy.

Once again, I am not denying hell, or anything the church teaches, just pointing out it says in the bible “there will be no more pain”. God loves you.

Estel, you have fallen into the error of universalism; the belief that everyone will be saved by a loving God.

This is not found in either the Bible or in Church teachings.

Biblically, you seem to have missed the following very clear verses and passages.

Mark 9:43
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not extinguished.
also Mark 9:45 & Mark 9:47
Isaiah 66:24
And they shall go out, and see the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me: their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched: and they shall be a loathsome sight to all flesh.

**Matthew 25: [41] Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels.

and verse*[46]* And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting.

The passages you refer to are taken out of context and are addressed to believers; particularly those who suffer persecutions for the faith.*

It’s no pain in general, not talking about heaven, it’s talking about all of God’s universe, after the first heaven and earth pass away. Not sure if you actually read the rest of Revelation but I did. The former things have passed away at this point, and death and hell go into the lake of fire, signifying they are no more. OK, no one really understands Revelation except God, but if it says no more pain, the scripture cannot be annulled. Also, the Greek word for eternity means age, so after eternity, this time of no pain will come about. God loves you.
You really need to read up on the Church’s teaching on Hell. It is Eternal and will never be “pain free”. Four Last Things, Death, Judgement, Heaven or Hell. God Bless, Memaw

I hold to the Churches teaching, but the words “forever”, “everlasting”, “eternity”, and “eternal” are words that can mean forever, or also a very long period of time. In the case of “eternal” life, this must go on without end. However, in the case of eternal punishment, my hope is that there is an end. If the bible says there is no more pain, and scripture cannot be broken, then we can hope confidently for a world without pain after “eternity”. And it is found in the bible, from none other than Saint Peter, who, speaking with the Holy Spirit and with the authority of the Rock, said of Jesus: “who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets.”

May the Peace of Christ be with you,

I would like to correct a view I previously posted on, although there is only a slight change. One post I called “no more pain = no more hell”, and this was likely borderline heresy. Furthermore, I got a bit defensive, and did not uphold a spirit of charity on the post. For that most of all, I am sorry. However, while I would still hold that the saying in revelation 21:4 applies to all creation, I must hold to the teaching of the church, in that hell exists, and is eternal. How this paradox can be reconciled, I do not know, but I’ll leave that up to God. May Jesus save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven.
