Due to the swine flu outbreak (not pandemic or even epidemic) in England there is no sign of peace apart from a bow but no more wine in case it spreads.

Not sure about your country but swine flu here has a very low mortality rate than normal winter flu we get every year.

I am sure the press enjoy blowing everything out of proportion.

several ongoing discussions on this topic (I assume you refer to offering the Precious Blood to the faithful during Mass) on the liturgy forum. I for one applaud the bishop’s directive on this since our diocese is in the eye of this epidemic and would feel the bishops were neglecting their duty if they did not offer such direction. I am sure their insurers and risk managers feel the same.

Are you speaking of the Chalice of the Blood of Christ during Mass? One recieves the entire Body, Blood Soul and Divinity of Christ in the species of the host.

Consider this your lent, your days in the desert. We went through this a while back (and I think it was a good call by the Bishops). I personally felt it brought more appreciation for the two (missing out on it and all.)

They curbed the Sign of Peace (ie. a bow or raising one’s hand in a small wave) at several parishes when the H1N1 epidemic claimed the lives of three or four kids here in MA, and they also did away with receiving the Precious Blood at one church my family was going to. I was glad to see the Sign of Peace toned down: I really don’t like strangers touching me, but even though I don’t receive the Precious Blood, I was a little sad to see it go, but I suppose it’s a sacrifice you have to make.
