I am not sure why, but there was no music or choir at Mass at my parish today.
It is amazing what you take for granted.
Praising and glorifying God through prayer is indeed wonderful, but adding song with it makes Mass even more enjoyable.
Thanks for those, in my parish and in parishes around the world, who play musical instruments at Mass and thanks for those who are choir members leading us in song.

An interesting word you used in your post “enjoyable”.

I attend daily mass and we never have music at daily mass. We have four masses on the weekend and the mass i regularly attend doesn’t have music, I think most of the others at least have music.

But on the word “enjoyable” I would like to comment. In our area we have several catholics who have left their parishes and started to attend other services. Most of those other services have Huge TV screens and large bands and choirs. It seems as though they are “entertained” and “enjoy” that better. I go to mass to praise the Lord and am glad to not have to sing, which I am terrible at. At home sometimes I sing within my heart but it is something that is stirred in me and not forced upon me.

Go praise the Lord and be thankful that it is available there are those who wish it was available to them. Just my two cents worth.

I prefer no music.
If the music was like the high masses of old that would be different.

I have been to Masses where the priest announced and led an opening hymn before the entrance procession. One of those times, at the end of Mass, the priest invited the congregation to pick a song and sing for the recessional, but no one did. I once heard of a parish where, when there is no musician or cantor, one parishioner takes it upon himself to sing, and others join in if they wish. There are possibilities. Perhaps you and I should be ready to sing.

Tarrat, I go to Church, first and foremost, to give praise and glory to the Lord. And to receive Communion.
I do not go to be entertained. If I wanted that, I would go to one of those churches you suggest, that have large TV screens and large bands and choirs.
But giving praise and glory to God through prayers, and song, is a wonderful thing.
By the way, singing because you have a poor voice is no excuse. You are there to please God and I don’t think God cares whether your voice is that of a professional singer. It’s all about God, not about us. 🙂
The following is the Notre Dame University folk choir.

Sorry you do not like present day church music.
But music can lift a person’s spirit and I believe God loves to hear us raise our voices through prayers and through song.

Well, actually, there are parts of the Mass that ought to be chanted even if there is no choir to lead the singing.
It is too bad there are so many places where the faithful don’t know how to do this. It isn’t particularly hard, although most people need someone who knows how to sing the parts of the people as a leader until the habit is well-established.
A parish nearby is using the same Mass setting as is usually used at the Cathedral, so the faithful will be ready to join in on the occasion of a Mass with the archbishop. I think that having a Mass setting that essentially everyone in the diocese uses at least on occasion is a really good idea.

I don’t like church music with guitars. To Protestant.

I wouldn’t mind church music if it was Gregorian Chant or some Schubert Ave Maria.

Any hymn written after 1700 should be avoided in Catholic mass I think.

We try to cover 100%, but we miss a couple of times a year. When everyone is working primary jobs, and have families, it is hard to be there all the time. Eventually, the odds catch up with us.

Please do not take one word out of context. If you choose to quote me, use my entire quote. Thanks!!! 🙂

Thanks for what you do! God bless you and others who add to Mass by leading us in praising God through song!

1700? That leaves out Schubert’s Ave Maria. 125 years “too late.”
Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, too.

Enjoy means to be placed in a state of joy. Music is powerful and can affect our emotions, as most people know. I look on posts like this as just one more way the God reaches into our humanity and meets us where we need. Thank you for your kind words.

A few years ago, a stringed quarter performed the Ave Maria at a Mass. It was simply beautiful.
