I wasn’t literal in saying 1700.
Just mean the older hymns which are Catholic in nature. Should not be written by a Protestant no matter how good it is, does not belong in a Catholic liturgy. We have such a treasure of hymns.

It isn’t the hymns that make Catholic music distinctive. It is the Mass settings.

We try to cover 100%, but we miss a couple of times a year. When everyone is working primary jobs, and have families, it is hard to be there all the time. Eventually, the odds catch up with us.
I should clarify, we do have music acapella. I hate getting in trouble with a call from my wife on Sunday (which I work a lot) to let me know she had to pick out hymns and lead the singing. If I do not give her warning, I will hear about it first thing after Mass! She does a great job, though she would never agree with me on that.

Why thank you, you’re very welcome.

I sing in my church’s young adult choir for just about every Sunday-at-5pm Mass. We frequently sing more modern music, mixed with some older songs. We frequently get told by visiting priests that we are very, very good.

Even for a Sunday Mass? No music, no singing, no chanting?

It’s strongly encouraged that there’s some sort of music — preferably chanting — but hymns and other songs are acceptable too at solemnity Masses (which include every Sunday Mass).

I’m thinking they meant Protestant Churches with bands and praise music.
They aren’t churches. They are ecclesial communities. I believe only the EO and OO are viewed as real churches. People leave the Church for that. Great. Bad catechesis.

Schubert Ave Maria.
This is Sacred Concert Music as opposed to Liturgical Music. The Assembly should be able to sing Liturgical Music. The Gloria, Great Amen,Holy holy holy, Lamb of God, the Responsorial Psalm and hymns set for the Mass.

I don’t like church music with guitars. To Protestant.
This made me chuckle. Where I live, we Protestants are the ones attached to old hymns and pipe organs - church music with guitars is seen as a Catholic innovation 😅

That said, the Catholic parish I attend has really great music, both classical (Sunday morning) and contemporary (Sunday evening).

The clue should have been other services, not other parishes or other masses. They are attending Protestant services.

Tomato tomahto. In common speech, most people aren’t going to use the term “ecclesial community.” (Although I’m not saying you’re wrong). And yeah, I agree… terrible catechesis.

But why am I suddenly remembering Monty Python and “I’m not dead yet”?’’’’

😜🤣

You’re making me feel my age! I sang that in college - in the last millennium… 😬

Where I attend, when there’s no choir, the congregation sings. And songs that almost everyone knows, with no need for solos or second voices.

Sometimes when there is no music we actually thank the Lord for the break.
