No need to abstain from meat today -Friday, Feb. 22?

My son attends a Catholic High School. He heard from two of his classmates that today is not a day we need to abstain from eating meat because it’s the feast day of St. Peter & it’s a day of celebration of our first Pope.

I had not heard of that. Do you know if it’s true?
 
The feast day of St. Peter is June 29th so it looks like someone is pulling someones leg.
 
I have no idea what days are feast days anymore, but feast days are not days of fasting. Hence the name.
 
In a similar vein, there are times when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday during lent. Our bishops here have a long tradition of either being directly from Ireland or of Irish descent. It’s not surprising then that when the holiday falls on a Friday, our bishops (including our current Ordinary, Bishop Moynihan) will issue a dispensation for the dioces for that day.

Corned beef and cabbage, baby! Mmmm…mmm…tasty! 😃

I think this is a mistake. Other saints feast days do not receive these back flips, like St. Patrick’s day does. In fact, if their feast day lands on a Sunday, its not observed except by those who religious order was founded by that saint. If it lands during Holy Week, as St. Patrick’s does this year, its not observed.

Its my opinion that St. Patrick would not be impressed the way his feast day is celebrated. In fact, if he we could hear him, he’d probably rather see it abolished.

Lets face it, its really not about St. Patrick, its actually Irish Pride Day. Not that its bad, but lets put Christ above such things.

You don’t fast on Solemnities. The Chair of Peter is a Feast. The only somemnities that fall during Lent are the Feast of St. Joseph and the Annunciation (both of which are transferred this year because they fall within Holy Week and the Octave of Easter.) You would not have to abstain on those days.

I’ve been thinking about it, and I could be completely wrong. I’d recommend checking a more reliable source than a random person on the Internet.

That’s the way I understood it, but I’ve been wrong before.

Yes, I did check the link and they seemed to be saying that we did need to abstain. That other poster I was responding to said on feast days, we feast - hence the name. Not sure who to believe -there seems to be some confusion - but but any rate, I can certainly live a day without meat, it’s not a big deal - I was just unsure what the rule was. I do remember that last year or the year prior on St. Pat’s day, meat was allowed so there must be exceptions. St. Peter seems as important as St. Pat … ?
 
Here’s the scoop: Friday, February 22nd was the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter - as already noted in a number of posts.
It was the Feast Day of St. Paul the Apostle.

As for St. Patrick’s Day, I think the dispensation was given last year (or whenever it landed on a Friday) to eat meat. However, I noticed a post mentioning St. Patrick’s during Holy Week. This year, that’s just when it falls - and, while it does not land on a day of abstinence, the New York St. Pat’s parade will go on, per recent news reports. I’m a tad disappointed - I would have preferred it take place the Saturday before. I just can’t imagine a parade during Holy Week.:nope:
