since the hatred for mormons was very real. Polygamy would have created an intolerable position for the early mormons if the cat was let out of the bag. And so, I can see denying polygamy in public. No problem.

I am pretty old like the Catholic Church is old, all relative you know…

The use of spectacles and so on sounds like early American story telling. When a person comes to Christ, they don’t need anything but the Spirit.

You have been on CAF for some time, so you know all the concerns, and probably have heard them a number of times in different flavors.

You always answer people charitably and we all appreciate that. And I personally have much affection for the Mormon people.

But it doesn’t add up. We Catholics experience the divine through the Eucharist, but the fruit is to serve others, incarnated, and to see the beauty of the world around us. So our churches reflect the beauty of creation received from God through Jesus Christ.

When you answer what Mormons believe now, I don’t see most of your present beliefs different than Christianity. Except the parts that contradict the Gospel.

It is through Jesus Christ that the universe was created by the Heavenly Father. Joseph Smith cannot be compared to Christ. He contradicts the Lord. There is masonry in the Mormon religion.

I would like you to come to a Catholic chapel with the psalms from the Bible, and sit there in the quiet and pray the psalms to the Lord and reflect…

All these ideas about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and their followers makes me want to say now, ‘Please come home!’

Thank you for sharing your concern and for thinking about me at all. I assure you that I feel the Holy Spirit very often in my life, so I am familiar with that and I understand why it might appear to you that Joseph Smith wouldn’t have needed “spectacles” (Urim and Thummim or a seer stone) in order to translate the golden plates, but having read the Book of Mormon over fifty times during the course of my life and found more truths in it each time because of gaining more insights through the Holy Spirit, and because I have a background in English language and literature and can detect literary complexity, originality, a persona in writing, and authenticity, I assure you that not one twenty-four year old nor any committee nor Shakespeare himself could have written such a book. It is humanly impossible, and Satan wouldn’t inspire such a book because it exposes him for what he is and exposes what he does among humankind, and he does not fight against himself in that way. (But he does deceive people by inviting them to create self-justification traps all the time, and it can be seen on the internet on many, many websites.)

Abraham sought “a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God,” and desired “a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:10, 16) So you see, I do not need to be invited home, because I recognize what Abraham sought and am familiar with the promises he received, and am “home” with the knowledge that God calls prophets and guides people of faith just as Paul described in Hebrews 11, in our day and time.

But I’m glad you feel “home” in your faith, if that is how you feel. It does not surprise me at all for one to feel that way with a tradition-based theology, because that is what having traditions does.

I don’t base my faith on Joseph Smith, though I am comfortable with his history and life and earnest desires and faith. I base my faith on having studied the Bible, understood it and its truths, understood the need for an intimate individual relationship with Christ and the Holy Spirit, and seen those relationships in my life and my wife’s life and the lives of many, many people. Have a wonderful day.

I must acknowledge the depth and sincerity that you demonstrate on your sharings and explanations you give us here…I respect your deeply held convictions, and yes, I am tradition oriented…and likewise see Sacred Scriptures as holding on to having certain parameters in how far ideas, images, events, and developments thought and faith can go, as well as recognizing the continuity of the peoples of Salvation History.

Recognizing the obvious goodness of your heart, I do see you and your intentions as part of that journey towards salvation. And in regards to good people like yourselves, whatever differences we have beyond this forum are only of God’s concerns. So as it is said in response to yours, let God be God.

Well like I said I do not spell well and was trying to say GIRL,Lets just say it is a typo,Kath, LOL You just can not be as old as the CC,LOL are you,Kath I can call you for dinner but nothing else, Have a great day and thank you for the post
