I just came from an evening Catholic Sunday Mass. Before the Offertory started, the priest announced to the people to come forward and put their envelopes of money in the collection basket. Thus no ushers were used.
Has this type of collection been at your church?

I only recall it happening once or twice, on holy days of obligation IIRC. I assumed that there was a problem with the ushers’ scheduling.

Standard practice at a couple of parishes in this area. Ushers never handle the collection at those.

My Parish has moved to direct debit options and prefer it to the envelopes

No.

That is a matter of scheduling.

I am not an usher, but it is my understanding that because they are handling money (and there is always the possibility of theft) that there are certain protocols set as to how the collection is handled after it has just been taken (that is, transferring the money to a secure basket or other means of protection) and then is presented during the offertory; and afterwards, is securely handled until it can be counted.

Thus it may not be possible to gather a couple of recruits on the spot to take up the collection.

In the event there are no Ushers for a Mass; why not just put a couple of collection baskets at the back of the Church & announce for people to drop their envelopes in after Mass.

I’ve seen churches that did get a recruit or two on the spot, and others where the congregation just passes a basket on their own, but I would imagine it depends on the church and whether it has had theft problems. I’ve also noticed more churches shifting to a direct debit or online pay method of contributing so maybe that makes the collection less of an issue. I know I rarely put any money in the baskets because I pay everything online and that includes sending donations to churches.

I do the same myself.

Maybe no-one has time anymore to learn to ush???

:):)🙂
Or, perhaps no one (meaning the pastor, or if he is lucky, the person in charge of training various people - ushers, readers, servers) has had the time to go to that Mass often enough to figure out who regularly attends it, and do some recruiting.

Some people are eager to volunteer.

Some people - well, you need a crowbar handy…

This is exactly how the collection is done at the daily Mass at our cathedral downtown. I’ve never been there for Sunday Mass. All of our local parishes near me still use ushers who move the collection baskets down the aisles. The cathedral still has ushers, though, who stand guard at the large baskets up front and then carry them off.

Yes! At the parish I belonged to for many years, the congregation approaches the sanctuary and places their donations into the baskets. I do not see it as rare or a problem. There may be a reason for such a practice? If the community has no issues about it, why complain. I have learned people love to complain but the most petty things or details. Please!

I belonged to a parish that did not take up a collection. You would drop your envelope in a bin (for lack of a better word) at the back of Church before or after mass.

Our parish does that with children. The pastor says, “would all the children come forward with thier gifts?” Then he sets the basket at the base of the altar.
This is in addition to the baskets going around.

I have mixed feelings about it.
Pro
  1. It’s cute
  2. It instills the virtue of tithing to children
Con.
  1. It’s awkward in the Mass to have kids leaving no the pews, parents fingering for loose change and the inevitable two year old that grabs a bunch of bills from the basket and then gets lost in the mad dash back to thier seats. It’s not liturgical.
  2. The cynical side of me thinks it has a little to do with emotional manipulation to get money.
