No Wonder Catholics are not considered Christians

I was watching the news the other night and a priest was commenting on the horrible shooting at the AME church.

His words really make me wonder how educated some of our clergy are. He said that both Catholics and Christians were outraged, I am paraphrasing him. If some of our own priests portray us as only Catholics and it sounded like we are not Christian, how can our own laity and persons in other denominations understand that the Catholic Church is not only Christian, but the only Church Christ started.

I just found it ridiculous for a priest who doesn’t seem to know that his Church is the first Christian Church and all others are breakaway either from it or from another protestant denomination. I assume he feels he is not Christian, sorry but it really offended me.

I have noticed that the media always have the priests on who are not always the strongest in their faith.

Might I suggest that you allow the priest the benefit of the doubt?

Especially in the South, the labels ‘Catholic’ and ‘Christian’ are well-known. And, although the labeling is erroneous, the common way that they’re used is as if they’re mutually exclusive. So, the priest, perhaps, is using the labels in the way that they’d be understood by the audience for the interview. Is that the proper time for a teaching moment in which he might get on his soapbox and explain that Catholics are Christians too? No, this isn’t the time for that lesson. So, give him a break, and take his comments for what they are: an affirmation that all who call themselves by the name of Christ are wounded by this tragedy.

I find it ridiculous that we presume that priests are stupider than the average guy on the street.

In some areas (like the south) the general population are evangelicals and non-denominational Christians, and they often object to being referred to as Protestants. I think the priest would have been more correct to say “Catholics and all Christians” or “Catholics and other Christians”, but it is highly likely that terminology is used in his region. I highly doubt that a priest would not be aware the Catholics are Christians, but rather chose to use the common terminology in order to be understood.

I always identify as Catholic. That is what distinguishes us as the first Christians.

Or, just “we Christians.”

But I’m not gonna criticize a priest who speaks off-the-cuff when a news camera gets shoved in front of his face. I think he did just fine.

Nine people had just been shot and killed in at bible study, one the pastor of the church and a state senator. As David, above me said, news cameras were being shoved in the priest’s face, he was no doubt being besieged with questions from (probably) less educated reporters, at least less educated in the field of theology. I think he just misspoke, which even Einstein, in that situation could co. I agree with DavidF.: the priest did just fine. In fact, kudos to him for having the courage to speak out. And I think most people know Catholics are also Christians.

“Catholics and Christians” can mean Catholics and all Christians. Sort of like you’re emphasizing one group then going broad.

Like if an apple were appealing to itself “we apples and fruits are a healthy snack”
