No work on Holy Days of Obligation?

I was researching Holy Days / All Saints Day on the internet and I found two encyclopedias that said Holy Days required Catholics to attend mass and abstain from servile / certain forms of work.

I know that we are called to attend mass on Holy Days when our diocese observes them, but I don’t recall hearing about a requirement to abstain from work.

Does anyone know more about this? Other then the encyclopedias, I haven’t been able to find additional information about abstaining from work on the Internet.

Wouldn’t that be great! Another reason why I shouldn’t go to my menial job today!!! 😛

Apparently in some countries they still observe the no work practice on Holy Days…particularly in Eastern Europe…Poland to be specific. That’s what I have been told.

All Saints Day is a legal holiday of course in Poland and many other European, Asian and Latin American nations. For most of the faithful there isn’t any work scheduled.
 
That refers to refraining from all types of “uneccesary” work…therefore, if your job requires you to work, and if you skip work and get fired…resulting in you not being able to provide for your family…then you are obligated to work…however, you shouldn’t take part in uneccessary work such as building a fence in your back yard, etc…Charitable work would be ok too.

I’ve tried to be careful about scheduling vaction days on Holy Days of Obligation, this time All Saints just flew out of my mind - so, I did not schedule ahead of time. Since a crisis at work came up, I missed noon mass at the Cathedral - and my son is playing in the Championship football game tonight. Praying that I can find a 6 PM mass between here and the city where the game is held. (Our 8 AM Mass does not work for working stiffs…)

Next year, I’ll remember to schedule off for All Saint’s Day…
 
I know that some, if not all of the schools here in the Archdiocese of Detroit have a normal schedule of classes.

Yep. and when there were none - called the Parish (one in the other town) to ask. We have found that some Parishes don’t notify the Mass Times web site often, and I was praying that they would have an evening Mass. The game was at 7, and I told my husband that if it was a 6 PM mass, great - if it was 7, I’d drop him off at the game, then I’d go to Mass (this was in a town about 30 miles from our home).

Nope, no evening Mass. They had a morning Mass and that was it (small town).

I’ll never make the mistake of working on a Holy Day of Obligation again!

Isn’t the employer (in the United States) required to at least try to accomidate us if we request the day off for Holy Days of Obligation?
