Noahic flood interpretation under a non-fundamentalist view

Good grief. I can’t believe we’re arguing over whether the Bible should be taken literally in a Catholic forum.

Yes, the power of water to carve features is great. And we would see that carving everywhere. But we don’t. Because there was no global flood. This is conspiracy theory thinking, taking bits and pieces that don’t actually say what you think they do and putting together the narrative you want, while ignoring all the evidence that contradicts you.
I am attempting to show you we do see these features across the globe. That is the point.

You claim there was no global flood, but you cannot provide empirical evidence there was not. You are wedded to uniformatarianism even though I am showing evidence of cataclysms.

I saw a video of flooding in Houston this year and a video of flooding in New Orleans ten years ago. That doesn’t mean they were the same flood and it covered the entire world.
Of course not.

There is mounting evidence of a global event that Catholics do not have to deny the reality of Noah’s flood. This can no longer be used against Catholics and other Christians.

Then why do you say “Here’s a documentary about floods in Washington caused by glacial lakes in 15,000 BC and here’s a theory about flooding in the Middle east caused by the mediterranean breaking into what is now the Black Sea in 5,600 BC. They must be the same flood.”

Is it possible in your mind the dating can be in error? Science is provisional, correct?

Possible, certainly. But the dating is not the main issue. You see, these hypotheses about flooding in the Black Sea and Washington are justified by the specific geological and geographical evidence of those areas. We don’t see that same evidence everywhere else and we would if there was a global flood.

Specifically with the black sea flood theory: The idea is that the black sea used to just be a dry basin. But sea levels rose after the last ice age, causing the Mediterranean to rise over the Bosporus strait between Turkey and Greece and into that basin, filling up into what is now the Black Sea.

That is radically different from a worldwide flood. My fear is that you’ve just seen something that said “Big flood” and just assumed it was evidence of a global flood.

Another Cataclysmic feature:

About 5,500 years ago, the melt waters were once again routed through Southern Ontario, restoring the river and falls to their full power. Then the falls reached the whirlpool.

It was a brief and violent encounter: a geological moment lasting only weeks, maybe even only days. In this moment, the falls of the youthful Niagara River intersected an old riverbed, one that had been buried and sealed during the last Ice Age. The falls turned into this buried gorge, tore out the glacial debris that filled it, and scoured the old river bottom clean. It was probably not a falls at all now but a huge, churning rapids. When it was all over, it left behind a 90-degree turn in the river we know today as the Whirlpool, and North America’s largest series of standing waves we know today as the Whirlpool Rapids.

The falls then re-established at about the area of the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge and resumed carving its way through solid rock to its present location.

You do understand the secular science rebuttals cannot admit a global event.

Yet again, you’re literally just pointing into the formation of a set of rapids by a waterfall. This is how rivers work!

That’s not the rebuttal, that’s the very evidence you’re trying to point to!

You asked if we see rapid formations around the world. Horseshoe bend is another.

Jesus and Peter spoke of Noah as a historical person. That’s good enough for me.

Yet another local flood. Are you just googling “historical floods” and acting like they prove the entire world was flooded at one time?

Rapid geological formations happen, but they are not all from the same event. We can usually tell exactly what caused them, like the Washington lakes or the Dead Sea. And Horseshoe Bend wasn’t formed by a flood.

Only because its a predominantly conservative American forum…makes for a very peculiar, almost quasi-Evangelical at times, brand of Catholicism.
