O all ye Scripture pundits and scholars:

I was reading the geneaologies in Genesis the other night and noticed an inconsistency in the way Noah’s sons are presented. From Adam up to Noah, the formula is:

When *Joe *had lived 100 years, he became the father of Jim. Joe lived after the birth of Jim 600 years, and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Joe were 700 and he died.

It goes on like this for generations, then, in Chapter 5 comes Noah, and it says: “After Noah was five hundred years old, Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.” That’s it.

So what’s the story? What do the old Rabbis say? Has anyone ever speculated that Noah’s three boys were triplets based on the formula change in the genealogy?
