Congrats on your fifth child! What a blessing.
I have 3 and get the rude comments all the time!

LOLMy BIL and his wife just had number 12 (that’s right, TWELVE!) a couple months ago. Someone asked him (at church, no less), “Don’t you know what causes that?”
BIL responded (very seriously): “Well, we’ve been narrowing it down for the last few years and now we THINK we know what it might be, but just to make sure, we’re going to try it again and see what happens.”
A Methodist friend with seven children used to tell people they “were not Catholic, just careless.”![]()
When I get this one I say “well of course we have cable, how do you think we keep the other ones busy while we are off making more?”This is from someone expecting her ninth. I swear, I’ve heard every stupid joke in the book, particularly the ones about how we need to get a TV or cable or something…

PS Congratulations on number five!
We are so stealing that one!!! Thanks! My BIL and his wife just had number 12 (that’s right, TWELVE!) a couple months ago. Someone asked him (at church, no less), “Don’t you know what causes that?”

Being who I am, I probably would have said, “there’s more at home - now mind your OWN business” :slapfight:I’m the 9th child of 11. I have wonderful memories.
I also have 4 of my own. Once, I was stunned to silence while we were at a mcdonalds, when there were only 3 children, and we were sharing french fries. A man leaned over into our booth & said “Lady, you have too many kids.” I laughed & shrugged it off & he said"No, I mean it." Didn’t know what to say. On the way to our car my DD asked why that man said those things & for whatever reason I could reply to her. I told her all my children are precious gifts & I could never have too many. So on the way home, I tried to think of a response if that ever happened again. Nevermind that I cleaned out my car’s ashtray to see if I had enough coins to give my kids a treat-that was just plain rude.
“You have a beautiful family,” is always a lovely thing to hear. Try not to ignore any nudges from the Holy Spirit in this area-- you may be telling a mom at the end of her rope just what she needs at that moment. Even if the kids are throwing a tantrum. When I see a big family, can I say anything to affirm them or should I just stay quiet and say a prayer for them?
My mom always loved it when people would tell her after Mass how good us kids were, or admired the fact that she could handle 4 kids 3 of whom were boys (I’m the oldest AND the only girl). It really is a good idea to tell large families how much you are grateful for them…it’ll set off all the negative comments they may have received.I am so grateful for those that have big families.
I realize comments are an intrusion and rude. When I see a big family, can I say anything to affirm them or should I just stay quiet and say a prayer for them?
Yes it really isn’t anyone else’s business. I know it is hard for people who want children or more and can’t have them. It doesn’t make it easier when busybodies feel it is their job to “correct” something that doesn’t need correctingyou are blessed.
it is amazing how rude people can be about anything in someone else’s life.
i have one son. and yet i am chastised by some members of OUR church who tell me that i shouldn’t use birth control…
what they don’t know is that i don’t.
and i wish i had more children,
but God doesn’t want me to have more apparently…
but people make comments where their noses don’t belong…
Oddly enough, we started getting this comment after #2.My BIL and his wife just had number 12 (that’s right, TWELVE!) a couple months ago. Someone asked him (at church, no less), “Don’t you know what causes that?”
BIL responded (very seriously): “Well, we’ve been narrowing it down for the last few years and now we THINK we know what it might be, but just to make sure, we’re going to try it again and see what happens.”
