Hi!
Last night (early this morning) I participated in my first Nocturnal Adoration of hte Blessed Sacrament. It was WONDERFUL! Spending time “keeping the watch” with Jesus, reading the psalms aloud, doing something for God instead of for myself.
I love love LOVED it and I cant wait until next month when our parish has it again! I’m trying to convince my husband to join too-- but we have to go to separate “watches” because of our daughter, who is much too little to go out in the middle of the night.
So my question is this: towards the end of the hour, the “leader” said a prayer, and prayed for our “plenary indulgence” as members of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, and for the plenary indulgence of hte deceased members of the Society as well.
I read the section in the encyclopedia about indulgences, but I’m having difficulty processing what it says there. What exactly is plenary indulgence? I THINK it is a reduction in the amount of time spent in purgatory. If that IS what it means, why would I be entitled to it for spending one hour a month keeping the watch with Jesus? I kind of…want it but dont want it at the same time. One part of me of COURSE wants to spend less time in purgatory. On the other hand, I dont want God to think I go to Adoration for the indulgence-- because I think that would be wrong.
So whats the deal here? Anybody have any insight?
