A good friend of mine who is a single mother asked me for advice on how to talk to her 9 year old son who began having wet dreams recently. I have been sharing the Catholic faith with her for a while so I wanted to give her a good “Catholic” answer. I did a quick search on google (perhaps not the best idea). Maybe I am a little niave but I was a bit shocked. The two sites I looked at were about as opposite as they could be. The first site basically encouraged masterbation and “play sex” to help aleviate the problem. I knew that was not the place to be! The other was mentioned in another thread here in the Moral Theology forum (search this forum for “nocturnal”). It’s a web site in New Zealand. densitychurch.org/discharges.html This guy sounds like he’s way off the deep end (he sells “don’t touch me I’m menstruating” and “don’t touch me I’ve had an emission” t-shirts and underwear and says that guys are impure for the rest of the day if they have one. :bigyikes:
Here’s the confusing part. He quotes several bible verses including Deut 23:10-12 and Lev 15:16. My guess is that this would be a Mosaic law versus New Covenant kind of thing. Can someone explain how these verses can be understood in Catholic theology? I read St Thomas Aquinas’ writing on the subject so I’m pretty confident that (unless the person did something while awake to help bring about the situation) it is not a sin. I just need someone to put these verses into perspective in a way faithful to Catholic teaching.
As a bonus, would anyone care to pass on advice to my friend on how to talk to her son? I have 3 kids myself, 2 boys but we never really had to deal with this problem.
They (my friend and her two sons) have quit going to church but she is somewhat open to hearing about the Catholic Church. She does not seem to have any predudices against Catholicism. I’m trying to witness to her whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Thanks!
