What is your observance of Holy Week?
Now. I know Lutherans and Episcopals observe this week, but I am seeking responses from other denominations as well.

I am attending an Episcopal church and am doing one of the Gospel readings for Palm Sunday today. We also have services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday as well as Easter.

There is an ecumenical cross procession/service in my suburb of Eagan on Good Friday afternoon.

When I was a Methodist, we had a Maundy Thursday service and the chapel was open on Good Friday for prayers.

Both of my parents were/are Christian, but my mother is the more ‘actively religious’ one, and she has always celebrated Holy Week in some fashion (she was raised Nazarene, is more of a Baptist now). She usually does something with palm branches on this Sunday, and when her children were young she would decorate an ‘egg tree’ with colorful plastic eggs, sometimes with scripture verses inside, or tiny objects that represented items from the Passion narrative. On Good Friday we would read something about the crucifixion, and on Easter we focused on the resurrection (to distract us from the bunnies and candy for a few minutes).

JustaServant,

:rotfl:

Not looking for chatty Anglicans? 😉

Yes, I know Catholics don’t consider Latter-day Saints Christians, but I’ll respond anyway. 🙂

LDS don’t have “Holy Week” services. Easter Sunday is celebrated with Resurrection themed hymns and sermons/talks.

I read on the Salt Lake Tribune website that some mormons are kind of getting into lenten observances, but more privately in nature.

It’s a start. 😉

That’s interesting, though I’m not surprised. A number of my non-Catholic/Orthodox Protestant co-workers were also celebrating Lent (I think some of them are Evangelical).

Oh and I think I remember reading about how a few LDS also have private Passover seders in their homes (I think I remember Daniel Peterson saying as much). But as a Church, we don’t do any of that, besides Easter Sunday.

Every week is Holy Week…every week is an opportunity to reflect upon the work of Christ and His grace.

I’m not feeling well today, so I didn’t go to meeting…I entered into Meeting alone today. There may be one moved to offer vocal ministry and mention the sequence of events recorded in scripture which led to the crucifixtion…but if no one is led ot offer vocal ministry today…no mention of it occurs. Not because we don’t think of it…but because every week is Holy Week…just like each Frist Day we remember the resurrection…so the celebration of Easter is a year round celebration…not relegated to one day a year.

First of all, for “every week being Holy Week” what a wonderful thing.

second…Hope you start feeling better soon.

Sister in Christ. God bless.

In my area, evangelicals are increasingly holding services in Holy Week, more than they used to. Historically they were hesitant to incorporate the “liturgical year”, I think partly because that brings up connections to Catholic tradition. If they were to celebrate the Catholic-designated “Holy Week”, follow the Pope in designating certain days (not just Sunday in general) as “holy” people might ask what else the magisterium is teaching. I believe evangelicals currently put more emphasis on these days partly because the Catholic Church gets so much attention on these dates, and they would like some of that. Also, their parishioners are expecting something, especially those who are former Catholics or have Catholic relatives. I think celebrating Holy Week may lead evangelicals towards more acceptance of sacramental or traditional Christianity, if this trend continues. The whole idea of consecrating a “holy week” comes out of the larger pattern of consecrating certain places, objects or persons.

All theology of glory!

Good question. I was about to start a thread on this after reflecting on the Palm Sunday, out of curiosity really.

@ Jon or Anna. My question was, do Protestants observe/celebrate Palm Sunday? I understand that mainline Protestants are closer to Catholics on this; it is from the other protestant denominations that I am more interested in. I wish they can give some (name removed by moderator)ut on the question, but it would be appreciated if you can share your thought on this.🙂

I’m Episcopalian, but a new one. We have the same Holy Week calendar Catholics have, but coming from a Baptist and Pentecostal background, it’s all still new to me.

Hi. What do you do on Palm Sunday? What do you make out of it? 🙂

Where I live the Evangelicals Baptists etc have a stations of the cross every year. They take turns carrying a large cross for several blocks downtown, stopping for the traditional stations.

Lutherans celebrate the same Holy Week as Catholics.

Palm Sunday: Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem,
Maundy (Holy) Thursday: the institution of the Lord’s Supper and the agony in the garden,
Good Friday: the crucifixion,
Easter Sunday: Christ’s resurrection.

Today’s sermon was on how the Jews hoped Christ was a political/earthly messiah and king, but he was humble and came to redeem us and give us a heavenly kingdom. We always have palm branches on the alter on Palm Sunday.

We also strip the alter for Good Friday.

My LDS family has never celebrated holy week, but my father has always had good Friday off and as a child we’d often use the 3-day weekend to go on a mini-vacation. This year, my younger siblings have Mormon Prom on Good Friday, so the only thing they will observe is Easter Sunday.
