Non-Catholic Forum sites you would suggest?

This one was posted already, but I want to add more details.
christianforums.com/forums

It’s a rather large network of forums, more people than there are on CAF but they’re also more spread out.

There’s a certain group of sub-forums that are for Christians only, and you talk about certain topics in each one. Then there’s another group of sub-forums that are only for certain Christian groups, for example Theologica Crucis is for Lutherans only, One Bread One Body is for Catholics only, non-denominational gets its own group, et cetera. There are also sub-groups for different types of Catholics, some of which aren’t exactly allowed to express themselves as much as they’d like on CAF (for reasons that are well founded of course), so you may want to look at them just out of curiosity. Anyone is technically capable of posting in any one of them without needing a moderator to activate something, but if you do post in the wrong one, someone will immediately tell you this is a more-restricted sub-forum and I’m sure it was a mistake, please make sure you’re posting in the proper sub-forum and let me suggest which one you can do this in.

And finally there is another family of sub-forums where non-Christians can talk to Christians, and a formal debate sub-forum is a part of that. This might be interesting to you, if you are up for more of a challenge. One person starts with a topic that needs to be approved by a moderator, there are certain rules of engagement, and people go back and forth for awhile but it’s limited to two people and they bring it to a close. It elevates and focuses everything, and you’re put under more pressure to be well prepared and have proper citations.

There’s a whole bunch of other sub-forum families besides that, including a chaplain area where you can talk to a chaplain about your problems and figure out what you should do. Plus a whole bunch of random-interest things where the people talking about them just happen to be Christians.

To the best of my knowledge, trolling isn’t really a problem and it is moderated, but it kind of seems like they don’t have too many fires to put out. It’s the sort of place where the same sorts of topics might be talked about on five different sub-forums, but there’s just one or two where a non-Catholic can pose the question to a Catholic and then they can return to a different sub-forum and talk things over just among themselves. Even the people who Really want to Change someone’s Mind have a place to try and do that, but it’s limited in scope and both people really need to do their research. It’s a different dynamic overall, and it also offers some variety that you probably won’t be able to find anywhere else. For example, traditional Catholics have a sub-forum (while also intermingling with larger religious communities to a degree), and liberal Catholics have a sub-forum (ask them what that means, no one seems to know!) but they also mingle with the larger community to a certain degree. You may also want to have a look at the debates and see what the end product looks like, by way of procedure and content.

Have a look around, there’s something for everyone and you can look for quite awhile.

Some Orthodox posters have been banned from CAF, so it is not possible for them to converse on CAF.
FWIW, I don’t currently spend very much time on OCnet, but I have participated there quite a lot over the years.

Only seen 1 poster get banned here since i was allowed to register in February, and she was practically begging for it. Sounded ugly just like a carm poster. CAF is very fair with people

Personally I like being on a Catholic website with a subforum for non-Catholic discussion, or an Orthodox website with a subforum for non-Orthodox discussion (or an Anglican website with a subforum for non-Anglican discussion …) Otherwise people mostly end up speaking just to those in their own denomination.

Lenten_ashes, I think Tomdstone was talking about Orthodox posters who were here years ago. I don’t to push us further off-topic, but if you want to know more about those people (also a lot of Eastern Catholics who participated on the forum) you might try search terms like “Eastern Christianity Forum” and “Joe Monahan”.

P.S. It goes without saying of course that there are also EO and EC posters here now. (And I very much appreciate y’all, if you’re reading this. :))

Btw, I was just thinking that we might need to be careful not to carry this thread too far. I.e. at a certain point it becomes more like website-advertisement, and I don’t want to see the thread get closed (or deleted). Hopefully we haven’t/won’t cross that line. :o

Yes, and that was one of the things I appreciate about CAF (though you can see me in pretty much any section). If they allow for some diverse discussion, I think that makes it more interesting, and you have the opportunity to learn a bit more. 🙂

Yes, this is reasonable. 😃

CAF has been great and I appreciate not getting attacked for my religion every time I post something irrelevant to religion. (I’m assuming that at least some other sites were like this.) The people here do not troll 24/7 and most of the statements that individuals have made seem to be charitable enough, though there are always exceptions.

Are there any other forums like CAF in its environment that you would recommend? Preferably forums of a religious nature like this just so I can discuss the same things in the same context.

Thanks!
First off, CAF is great for dialogue, but if you seek the same thing in a Protestant context, allow me to recommend www.christforums.org. Also www.christianforums.com, for a more inclusive dialogue.

The only posters I have seen who cannot post on CAF without getting banned are fundamentalists, SDAs, and JWs.

I know a few good conservative Catholics who have been banned from here. With absolute no knowledge of what they did wrong. I’ve also seen a number of people who would fit into this category banned and I can only assume (going by their posts) that they weren’t seen as ‘Catholic enough’ because they challenged peoples thinking on hot topic issues. Even though they never once challenged Church teaching and in fact were living examples in some instances of following it despite how hard it was.

CAF seems to have no mind or reason as to who they ban or why IMHO.

Baloney.
They know exactly what they did wrong.
We also know nothing of what happens behind the scenes as we are not allowed to discuss mod actions on the forum
Which, I might add, your post come dangerously close to doing.

As long as we don’t link some of the crazy ones (common sense should dictate that), no sense giving them advertising. Otherwise post away.

However…

General warning:
If this thread turns into a complaint session on how CAF moderates the board or discussing mod actions, it WILL be closed.

If you have questions on the moderating of this or any other forum on CAF, go to staff chat or PM.

christianmums.com is a friendly little forum mostly for women as the name would suggest. It’s quite quiet at the present time but has had some lively discussion in the past. Mostly protestant, they are very active in prayer and kindly moderated. Just to add a little something niche to the discussion 🙂

I realize there are not many on CAF who might be able to answer this, but besides the subgroups of christianforum.com, are there any such sites where someone for whom the mainline-progressive branches of Christianity resonate along with political progressivism might be more welcomed?

I’ve rarely seen anyone here of the UCC or PCUSA branches but I know there seems to be a few at least moderately progressive Episcopalians here and I know of someone on CAF of the ELCA. Are there any sites in those branches of Christianity similar to CAF in format that anyone knows of?
