non-catholic lector?

if this is a Catholic chapel or center on a non-Catholic college campus, it does not function as a regular parish, and perhaps things are done too informally. Is there a regular chaplain assigned, or do you have visiting priests? It may be that she started attending for convenience, as you say, and someone asked her to read one day, not realizing she is not Catholic. More than likely if active in her own denomination she has a good aquaintance with scripture and felt comfortable saying yes. Obviously it is not her job to know the rules, but the person who asked her should be making sure readers, altar servers and other ministers are properly trained and commissioned. Is there somebody “in charge” whose job that is? or is it more informal? Why not just ask the person in charge and find out if this was done deliberately, or an honest mistake?

I would be much more worried if she were receiving communion, and then it would surely be your duty, if you know her well enough, to explain why that is wrong.

Only lectors are instituted. Readers are commissioned.

“Lector” is simply Roman for “reader”, but it’s abusive use in the Church today to describe what are actually readers should cease.

It’s right up there with the “Eucharistic Ministers.”

Is there a FOCUS group on your campus? They might be able to help you out with transportation. How about a Catholic friend with a car? Are you on a bus line? Are there more than one parish in your vicinity?

really now? Where was I when that rule was set? Really now, girls can be lectors or altar servers if they wish. The only thing they can’t be are priests( and bishops)

I don’t know where were you in 1983 when the current code of Canon Law came out? Do you have a copy? Look at the canon I posted. I believe this canon is also referenced in the GIRM and RS.
