I really have no thought or opinion on the event itself. No significance to my life.

I find the quote interesting as he seems to be asking Mary to do more than intercede to Christ, but to actually assist in the selection. Much different than I hear people say her role is here in this forum. “We just ask her to pray for us like.”

From his resignation.

*And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. *

If the pope is leaving it to the care of the supreme pastor, why does Mary need to assist.

Mary said Yes to God. Jesus’ blood came from her. God designed it that way. Do you think Jesus isn’t thankful, respectful? We can implore for her “solicitude” where she intercedes for us.

I’m saddened, but I can understand that at his age he needs a more restful lifestyle. My prayers are with the Catholic church.

I know I’m not a non-Catholic, but I just have to say 😦 and I never knew that a Pope could/would resign. I thought they had to die or become incapacitated.

Anyway, I love Pope Benedict XVI!!!
I am a non-Catholic. I also didn’t know that, but am glad that he didn’t die or become incapacitated.

Hopefully, the transition to the next Pope will be smooth, and the present Pope can finally have a well-deserved rest and live out his remaining years in a peaceful but meaningful manner.

The majority of the BBC comments posts were callous and cruel. Still alot of hatred for
catholicism…

Sorry but I don’t get your question. 🤷 Where is the Pope saying or even implying that this intercession MUST go through Mary? Where is his intension directed directly to her? He is simply imploring here assistance. Why would we not implore her, all the saints, you and me to assist in this very important time?

Peace!!!

I have no idea what you are talking. Mary said yes to God about having Jesus, therefore, she can help select a pope? Not sure how we get there from the incarnation.

Mary assists the same way any of us can, by her prayers. Do prayers not assist? And the prayers of a righteous man avail much. Mary was a righteous woman, so she can certainly assist by her powerful prayers.

He is asking Mary to provide solace. This is in keeping with Christ’s directive for us to adopt Mary as our mother. It is not quite the same as asking her to intercede into the direction of the conclave.

As an adult convert, I was surprised at the feeling of loss when JPII died and we were left without someone in the chair of Peter for those days back in 2005. I never expected that. It is something non-Catholics have a hard time understanding. For us, the pope is not a figure head, but a very real rock or anchor to our entire Church. And losing our Pope to an historic resignation instead of death raises many questions for us to grapple with. It is an excellent time for us to run to our Mama for solace.

If you want to start a thread about this, feel free.
Do not derail this one.

I have no strong feelings about the matter one way or the other. I have good will towards the Catholics I know personally, and wish them well during this transition.

I thought the article itself was fairly well done. People’s comments are always idiotic on news stories

Wait… seriously? You stopped with ‘Mary’ and ‘assist’, and didn’t continue on through to “with her maternal solicitude”? Dude – all the pope is asking for is Mary’s concern. And, how does Mary express her concern for us? As in all things, with prayer and intercession. It’s really not all that difficult… 😉 👍

My husband just now said “I’m sorry hon, you must be in shock.”
Not all non believers are harsh and some are hoping for us all to have peace in this turmoil.

Keep the faith, because our reactions are a light for this world.

Thank you, that means a lot. The press is already going after the Church in a HUGE and nasty way.
