Non-Catholic reactions to your Ash Wednesday ashes

But it really doesn’t matter much since… Sorry but for you guys it just isn’t really real.

I think that is how the Anglicans and Catholics do it too. And yes, it makes you reflect on your mortality

I think Anglicans and Methodists both still use the traditional words “Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return” wheras Catholic parishes have generally gone for the much blander “Repent and believe in the Gospel”.

I am lucky that I now attend a traditional parish (not EF, just traditional and great liturgy and msuic) which marks the day with much solemnity. For many years I was unable to find a Catholic parish near me that was able to mark the day with any degree of solemnity - it was always a quick mass, no music, in and out within 40 minutes - no chanting of Psalm 51, none of the great Lenten hymns (Forty days and forty nights; God of mercy and compassion, Be thou my guardian and my guide) and no sense of the beginning of the great season of lent.

I’m so happy for my Catholic friends that there seems to be a renewed interest and availability in the traditional forms of the liturgy. It makes me happy to see!

Actually, I think he failed! New to this site, just joined yesterday so I coundn’t comment on Ash Wednesday. Living in NYC I think the earlier you get them the more people are confused. However, by about three or four in the afternoon they get it! Unlike a previous poster I love the Newman Center on my campus, I also never had a problem walking around with ashes. Sometimes I feel having them on my head gives me a feeling of pride, especially the way things are these days.

Cool…I like the idea of other Christians celebrating Ash Wednesday, I know most denominations don’t. Or at least I don’t think they do.
