Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with stories of non-Catholic men feeling called to the priesthood (while outside of the Church)? I’d love to get some links or find the texts of such vocation stories.

Thanks for your help!

I’m not sure of any specific stories off the top of my head.

Often times the call to conversion is misinterpreted by some as a call to ministry. This is why most places require one to be a Catholic for about three years before pursuing a vocation. Plus, this makes sure the seed did not fall in the shallow soil, but rather in the fertile soil where deep roots can take hold.

There have been quite a few protestant ministers that converted and were ordained Catholic priests, e.g. Fr. Neuhaus.

I don’t know how they would untangle the call to conversion and the call to priesthood.

God Bless

It is possible, I think, given the words that a Priest gave to me recently. He told me to look at it this way. I may have a vocation to the priesthood (or may not for that matter) and the Lord led me to the Catholic church in order to fulfill that calling.

I’m a convert, and I was dead-set on becoming Catholic for well over a year before I felt a “call.” At first I dismissed it (“I’m not even Catholic yet, so thinking that I am called to be a priest is ridiculous!”) but shortly after, my priest who was doing RCIA one-on-one with me asked if I hadn’t been thinking about religious life. I deflected at the time, but the priest told me that he “wouldn’t be surprised” to see me become a priest. Since that experience, I have frequently had Catholics (and even a few Protestants) ask me if I intended to join the seminary or tell me that I would make a good pastor. Again, I’m still very much aware of the perception, and perhaps the reality, that converts’ zeal may be at work, so I generally avoid answering people who say things like that, but I have been talking to my diocesan vocations’ director.

My diocese holds to the 3-year rule as well, which I think is probably a good thing. I’ve been Catholic for less than 6 months at this point, so what’s the rush? I’m learning to deepen my faith in new ways all the time, and I’ll bet that in the next two and a half years I’ll have grown enough to know whether this “call” is genuine or if God is just using it to develop me for another purpose.

God only knows the future. I have no idea where I’ll end up, but I’m content to go anywhere, as long as it’s with Him.

GIMJ,

May the Holy Spirit continue to guide you according to God’s will! Try not to ever forget that convert’s appreciation of the pearl of great price! 🙂

I’m a convert from the Anglican tradition. While I was an Anglican, I felt the call to ministry in an AngloCatholic setting, I was recieved into full communion of Catholic Church and still plan to presue God’s call to the fullest.

Amen, why rush? For me, being Catholic for about a year now, I desire to deepen the knowledge of the faith. I also am only 28 years old, and the average age entering seminary in my diocese is 30. My vocations director did not hint at any time limit rule for our diocese, but he is not a recruiter trying to get me to sign up either.

We have several priests here in the Diocese of Savannah who are converts.

One in particular stated he felt God calling him to the priesthood before he had converted and he responded, “But I’m not even Catholic.”

To that God replied, “I’ll take care of that.”
