If you don’t trust the authority of the Catholic Church, how do you know what Jesus said, as recorded in the Bible, are true?

Because the Church said so. 😃
Yep. Pretty much.

But there are those who insist that they don’t need to submit to the authority of the Church…

but their position is untenable, IMHO.

I’d like to know how they can coherently assert with confidence that Jesus said what he said, while also denying the authority of the CC.

How do you trust that the Catholic Church has any authority to say whether what Jesus said was true? 😃

Because the church, guided by the Holy Spirit, maintained His word to proclaim the Gospel for all.

(Lutherans hold that we’re a valid continuation of the western church)

I don’t think I understand this question. Is the premise that in order to believe that the bible is the inspired word of God, you have to trust the catholic church? If that is what you are asking, for me I don’t find it at all contradictory to be a christian and be non-catholic. Just as in the same way I do not think everyone has to be anglican or methodist etc. to follow christ.
People do not trust the catholic church and reject their authority for many valid reasons. I do not think doing so makes you less christian (I am sure you disagree).

Can the words of Jesus not be authoritative without the Church?

Some of the most devoted followers of Jesus Christ are not Catholic. These are some of my closest friends.

A Bible and guidance from the Holy Spirit puts Jesus right with you.

I wouldn’t dare say that the most devoted followers of Jesus Christ are not Catholic. That’s actually a bit judgmental and uncharitable.
I know incredible Catholics that have so much grace that one can see all the beatitudes in their faces already.

However, with so many different interpretations one is forced to conclude that despite the fact that some think they are guided by the Holy Spirit, that might not be true because the Holy Spirit wouldn’t contradict Himself.
Only the magisterium of the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit.
We are also not to make private interpretations as St. Peter tells us.

Jesus’ words are authoritative period.

The real question is how do you trust that
  1. they are recorded accurately and
  2. that the manuscripts we gave are preserved properly.
For those questions one requires something other than scripture…namely…the church

**There is no intrinsic meaning in the leaves of a book, but the thought they convey leads you to reflect upon reality. The reality of Jesus was the perfect meaning, the Christhood in Him which in the Holy Books is symbolized as the Word. “The Word was with God.” The Christhood means not the body of Jesus but the perfection of divine virtues manifest in Him.

~ Abdu’l-Baha, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, p. 154**

If Assemblies of God were 2000 years old I’d buy it.

But where did AOG get there assurance from that the Bible was inerrant?
Well AoG is Christian and Christianity is 2000+ yrs old so I buy it. 😉

The Holy Spirit of course!

So you rely on the Christians before assembly of God that had bishops and popes and celebrated mass and all that good stuff.

They can be trusted And led by the Holy Spirit to maintain the Bible…they just got the doctrine all wrong.

Yep. That is why I am not a Catholic anymore. You believe you have it all right and converted to Catholicism.

Probably one of those battles neither of us will win. 🤷

When I was Protestant, I KNEW the words of Jesus were true because they were written in red! Seriously.

It just seems so nonsensical and illogical.

You basically are saying, the Holy Spirit led and guided the church…except in this this this this and this…he didn’t lead them there.

He waited 1914 years until some Pentecostal ministers got together and the Holy Spirit decided to lead them for the first time in history…
