Non-Catholics how do you view Catholicism?

I think that you’re trying to prove some kind of point with the above little ditty, but you’ll have to explain it to me. I was never very good at interpreting bad poetry (or good even poetry, for that matter). Just tell us what you really think. Just be careful not to say anything that’s banable.
It’s a parody of “Gather us in” - sing it to the tune and it will all make sense. 🙂

Yeah, I get it that it’s a parody. But it mentions…“brought here by guilt or by RCIA.” So, is this a slap towards the Catholic church, or do Lutherans have RCIA too?

. I though it was just Catholic tradies like me who have a problem.
Don’t worry - you good Catholics aren’t just reactionary - you’re in good company with being really suspicious about Marty Heugen and David Hass.

We joking refer to both of them has Heugen-Hass - like the syrupy sweet Haagen-Daz ice cream, it’s tasty but not nutritious.

It’s not a slap against the Catholic church - it’s just a fun version that makes light of cafeteria catholicism in both our churches and the “feel-good” mentality of these modern times.

The RCIA reference is just the ‘Catholic’ verson of this parody.

Marty’s Mass has it’s own parody:

Mass of Creation (after Marty Haugen)

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

Marty, Marty, give it a rest.
Who said your Mass was the best?
It’s all I hear, from the farm to the city,
Your eucharistic ditty.
Liturgists love you, organists cannot compete.
The lay sway to your beat,
The lay sway to your beeeeeeeeeeeat.

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

Though you tried, Chant has risen, and we’ll chant again.
Though you tried, Chant has risen, and we’ll chant again.

JESUS LAMB OF GOD

What’s that awful sound? It’s Marty Haugen’s Mass again. Have mercy on us.
What’s that dreadful sound? It’s Marty Haugen’s Mass again. Have mercy on us.
Can’t we stop that sound? And not hear Marty’s Mass again? Grant us some peace.

The source is actually a Catholic priest. So we’re innocent of this one 🙂

Um, no, Fr. Z didn’t write it. I’m not a fan of Fr. Z, but even he wouldn’t write something like that, and the merit of posting it on his website is questionable, at best.

So does Per Crucem think that the Church is no longer the One True Church of Christ due to the nuttiness that occurred in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s? I think that it might be a good topic to discuss. Certainly traditionalists have been discussing this issue for quite awhile.

No, because that nuttiness is something which has affected most major Christian church bodies. The Catholics (especially here in the US), are no more immune to it than we are. We deal with it in our Synods, so I really have no room to lob criticism.

It’s a mess, to be sure. I don’t think it invalidates doctrine. It just means the nuts need to go away into their own dens and leave the rest of us alone.

Fair enough. Thanks.

To be perfectly honest ( and mods if this is against the policies then feel free to delete the post)

As an Orthodox Christian, I believe that the Catholic Church is schismatic and heretical. I also believe they are much closer to the truth than protestants in some areas, yet I believe that the protestants are closer in some other aspects.

I do not say this to start a fight or to disrespect anyone.

Well, if I was dead honest about what I think about it, it would offend people’s socks off and I’d get banned. I don’t want that, so I will just briefly summarise what I think. I view Catholicism as a misunderstanding of God’s message for mankind. A lot of that has to do with the Trinity.
Most of the protestant churches believe in the trinity just like the Catholic.

Can we please get back on topic, this is not about the hating of the song Gather Us In.

You asked and I’m answering honestly.

In the past, my view of Catholicism was always that it is a Christian religion that has added worship of Mary and statues. Mostly, I rarely gave it a thought as I never had any close Catholic friends and I don’t think Catholicism has ever been mentioned at any Protestant church I’ve ever attended.

In the past, my view of Catholics has always been that they are people who say Jesus Christ a lot as a curse, and live completely immoral lifestyles that any Christian should be ashamed of, hence my never having any close Catholic friends. They weren’t people I wanted to spend time with. Also, Catholics seemed completely ignorant of the Bible, Christianity and Catholicism.

Now, after having read the CCC, lots of other books on Catholic beliefs, and having attended Mass and Inquiry class for several months, my view is that Catholicism is Christianity (I can’t give up my belief that “The Church” is the whole body of believers, not just Catholic believers-I expect to see both Billy Graham and C.S. Lewis in heaven) with quite a few good-hearted and well-intentioned people trying to live a life that emulates Christ’s. The ignorance of most about their own faith still stuns me and I look forward to the day I’m able to formulate a question simplistic enough for the deacon who leads my inquiry class that he’s able to answer it.
