I have a question regarding non-Catholic children or children of lapsed Catholic parents in Catholic school. My husband and I were raised Catholic. We had our child baptized Catholic, and shortly after started attending the Episcopal church. Our child is being raised Episcopal. We have a lot of respect for the Catholic faith, but the Episcopal church is a better fit for us.
My husband and I are increasingly unhappy with the public schools in our community. We are looking at various private schools, including a couple Catholic schools. I am just wondering if my child and our family would be welcome in a parochial school? I know they would very likely enroll us, but I wonder if our child and family would be fully welcome and accepted in the school community?

Your mileage may vary based on your particular Catholic school, but I cannot imagine your family being anything other than welcomed. Our parish school has a number of non-Catholics. I think any school would.

Of course, Catholic teaching and practice is going to be what is taught in the classroom. As long as you are okay with that, then I don’t see any problem.

I would encourage you to give the school a call and speak with the principal. I’m sure she/he would be happy to show you around and respond to any concerns you have in this regard.

I just have to add, I thought it was beautiful at my parish school that one of the non-Catholic dads at our school was still right there at the post-1st Communion reception handing out cookies and punch. Even though the family is not Catholic, they are still part of the school family.

I think it really depends on the culture of the individual school. I know a lot of them where other Catholics aren’t welcome! If the school is following Catholic teacher, everyone should be welcome.
