When I was growing up, a number of years ago, the different churches tended to keep to themselves and there was only occasional contact between them. But I don’t remember bashing of other churches. Members tended to think that the church they belonged to was correct and wondered why others didn’t believe the way they did. Churches were divided in peoples’ mind into Protestant (eg Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist), Anglican (Church of England/Episcopalian) and Roman Catholic.
I doubt that many Protestants and Anglicans actually knew much about Catholic doctrine except about the requirements to confess to a priest, that you had to go to Mass on Sundays and that if you married a Catholic you would have to agree to the children being brought up as Catholics. This was seen as unacceptable, and still is, as it was considered disrespectful to other Christian Churches and to those who had no religion.
