After reading yet another you-Catholics-are-mean thread today, I’m convinced that many, maybe most, non-Catholics who come to this board, come here to trash Catholicism or to try to convert Catholics to another faith.

When non-Catholics find here Catholics who are knowledgable of and firm in their faith, it seems as if it’s a shock to them. It’s like they came here expecting an easy job, but instead found that, not only is the job difficult, but also that their work is thwarted by the very people (Catholics) they expected to be such easy targets.

To non-Catholics, what is your goal in posting here?

For those who come here to denounce Catholicsm, do you find trashing Catholicism to Catholics more difficult than when you do it with your like-minded friends? If you came here to convert Catholics, is it, as it appears from your posts, a shock when Catholics actually know their religion and aren’t interested in the least in converting to yours?

For those non-Catholics who are here simply to learn about Catholicism from “the horses mouth”, have you found the answers here to be enlightening? Do you feel that you know more about Catholicsm after getting answers here? I wonder, though, if the crazy debates, with all the absurd claims about Catholicsm by non-Catholics, make it more difficult for you to keep the facts straight.

Kalt,
Yes I have learned a lot about Catholicism and Catholics. And yes, it is much easier to learn what Catholics think on the threads that are charitable and based on discussion, as opposed to the “I’m right, you’re wrong” threads.
As distracting as some Protestant attackers can be, the SSPX types can really confuse things. Sometimes their attacks seem much more angry.
There is a reverse side to your coin, however, and it is that I, and other Lutherans particularly (Triune Unity is probably the best), spend a fair amount of time correcting misconceptions about Lutheranism.

This is why I wandered to this board. I just want to understand the way Catholics think and also understand Catholic Theology. Which is exactly what I have learned. It is not hard for me to keep facts straight but I do get overwhelmed with all the rules of the Catholic faith. I have not wavered in my personal faith but I have come to understand the Catholic faith much better and find I can be more respectful of the faith of my Catholic friends. In turn, I hope people on this board (of the Catholic faith) understand my beliefs a little better and not attack my faith but just say “Oh, now I understand you a little better.”

I came as a Protestant (still am), who is interested and an drawn to Catholicism. The Board has been quite helpful to me in my walk. I wouldn’t say that it is the cause of my conversion to Catholicism, though its been faith building to fellowship with Catholics and also to converse here with other Protestants (and Lutherans) who disagree on Catholic doctrine.

I am now in RCIA - I’m about 1/2 way across the Tiber 🙂

Blessings,

Brian

Personally, I originally came here to ask a question about the current pope’s spiritual influences. Then, I thought that while I’m here I might as well make myself useful and attempt to answer any questions about Judaism anyone might have. Then, I thought I might stick around and ask a few more questions about Catholicism.

I think it’s extremely important, in today’s day and age, to be familiar with the teachings and history of the Church, given the sheer size of the global Catholic population and the role of the pope as the head of one of the most powerful organizations in the world. I happen to like this pope (although I really dislike his choice of name) and am interested in learning more about his spirituality. As a Jew, I also affirm the Church’s emphasis on action over doctrine (although I understand that the Church still maintains dogma).

To be honest, I recently read Karen Armstrong’s “A History of God,” which told me a lot more about Christianity than I ever knew before (although I had previously considered myself fairly knowledgeable about Christianity).

I have no interest in trashing Catholicism. For that matter I have no interest in converting to Catholicism.

I guess I am going through a phase where I want to learn and understand Christians who are not like me.

Mixed bag.

As my handle shows, I like to ask questions. I have gotten answers (some good) to some of my questions, while questions others have been avoided.

Some people here are quite nice and pleasant to talk to. Others not so much. So you are about the same as us as in that regards.

One poster here was very condescending and insulting to me, but through him I discovered the ignore poster feature, so he will no longer be that way to me.

I come here to learn about Catholocism, I do not try to convert anyone, even though thats what a lot of people have tried to do to me.

This board offers a diverse mix of religions, more than some others. Sometimes I agree with them including Catholicism, other times not. That’s the main reason I come here, diversity.

I feel my own position is similar to that of this poster:

“I have no interest in trashing Catholicism. For that matter I have no interest in converting to Catholicism.”

As this is a Catholic internet forum, there is no point in trying to argue with people who have already settled their minds on Catholicism and its teachings. Still, Catholicism respects philosophy, one of my main intellectual interests, and that is probably the main reason why I come here.
