Non-Confirmed Confession and Marriage

Is it possible for a baptized, non-Comfirmed Catholic to go to Reconciliation? Or is this type of action frowned upon and/or considered a sin?

Also, can a non-comfirmed Catholic get married in a Catholic Church?

Thanks. Well the thing is that I want to get married this year. I owe it to myself and my fiance. BUT, RCIA does not start til September. I wouldn’t be able to get confirmed till next year! My plan is to get married, then persue the RCIA program in order to get comfirmed.

Have you made your First Confession and received your First Communion? Normally there is some preparation before receiving these sacraments for the first time.

I’ve taken Communion. Never confessed. I don’t plan to take Communion again until I have confessed though.

You cant receive the sacrament of communion UNTIL you prepare for and receive the sacrament of reconciliation usually as a child}. …Unless you were never baptised and all would be part of your RCIA?? What stage of “becoming” catholic are you currently at? I would advise you to only discuss your situation with your{a] priest who will be officiating your marriage…

I am a Catholic. I was baptized as an infant. I was just never confirmed. My grandmother educated me about catechism as a child and I took Communion. It wasn’t until I was older when I realized there was an “official” way of doing things.

If you have never been through the process of preparing for and receiving your first reconciliation, you cant just 'start" receiving communion… They are both sacraments that need to be conferred by a priest. I suspect this is also how you never " came into" being confirmed… You really need to talk to your priest…You can get validly married but all the other sacraments will be part of your RCIA… ps… i hope i am not giving you 'off base" --just trying to help. Really-- talk to your priest.

Talk with your pastor. He’ll probably recommend RCIA as the way to prepare you for First Confession, First Communion, and Confirmation.

If this person is baptized Catholic and were prepared for first communion at some point, they also no doubt were prepared for confession, so they simply have to return to the sacraments. He should ask about confirmation preparation at the earliest opportunity, nearly every parish has classes for adults. It makes no sense to attempt marriage, with all its demands, without the strength of the Holy Spirit from this wonderful sacrament. If one is not willing to complete one’s Christian initiation, it may cast doubt on one’s intention to do all that is entailed in committing to the sacrament of matrimony, and in raising one’s children Catholic.

Canon law says Catholics should be confirmed before marriage, but that is something that can be initiated the same time you begin wedding preparations, and should not delay your wedding. See your pastor at the earliest opportunity, that is the only way to get an answer that fits your individual situation.

You can’t take that for granted. None of my children prepared for confession before First Communion and they made their First Communion in 3 different parishes/3 different dioceses. In each instance Reconciliation was prepared for and celebrated a year later but a move to another parish/diocese at the wrong time might have meant never preparing for that sacrament.

Yes, I know what Canon Law says but it appears that our bishops didn’t agree with that. So, from what I experienced, I’d say there is at least a whole generation out there who received communion without making a sacramental confession first.
