Hello all,

This is my first post here at CAF. The “Meet and Greet” thread was not allowing me to reply so I figured I would just begin here.

I was born and raised Catholic, still am today, married eighteen years with two daughters. You could say I am feeling the need to reinvestigate my faith for deeper understanding and a closer more intimate relationship with our Lord and Savior.

My question for anyone is: does the Catholic Church specifically speak against the use of a daily devotional that is NOT Catholic? I have been using, and still enjoy, “Our Daily Bread” devotional for some 27 years, since about the time I enlisted in the Navy, and I am beginning to wonder if I shouldn’t based on particular Church teaching. I know there are Catholic devotionals available; this one is familiar to me and is sent to me monthly. I guess you can say that I continued with it because I never thought about it not coming. I still use the Bible that I received when I graduated high school, a New American Standard version Catholic Bible.

Any comments about devotionals would be helpful and welcome.

I don’t know the contents of the devotion “Our Daily Bread”, but I could say that if I am a Catholic, I want to practice Catholic devotions. There are so many great Catholic devotions that we could use, why not using it.

Besides, our Catholic devotion practices could be a good example for our love ones.

may i suggest you get a copy of fr. gabriel o.c.d. ,s book
“divine intimacy”, it is an excellent daily devotional.

Catholic devotionals are vast in number. There is one for every person for every occasion.
 
MAGNIFICAT magazine would be a suggestion, that includes the daily mass readings:thumbsup:
 
a good one that is similar in format to Our Daily Bread is One Bread One Body from Presentation Ministries. has citations for daily readings, plus reflection on them for the day, prayer thought, and discipleship thought, very inexpensive or free if you can’t afford it.

a step up is Word Among Us, which can be purchased with or without the order of the Mass and daily readings, which has a some one longer devotional teaching on the readings, plus helpful articles.

you are praying with an incomplete bible, and the one closest in “style” to the NAS is the New American Bible, the only one approved by the bishops for liturgical use in the US, which you should be able to find for about $10 in a paperback at bookstores or online.

no there is no specific prohibition against using a devotional written by a non-Catholic, I am sure many are fine in general, but depending on the source may promote some specific anti-Catholic ideas (no need to confess sins to a priest, communion is symbolic only etc).

First, I had mis-referenced the Bible I possess at home, it is in fact the NAB, I couldn’t recall (I was at work at the time of posting).

In all the years of using the devotional I’ve never noticed any anti-Catholic undertones. I do use the MAGNIFICAT twice-a-year, when my church distributes them for Lent and Advent. Some of the others I haven’t heard of but will begin looking into.

Welcome to the forum!

I have a copy of “Our Daily Bread,” which my wife received when she was in college, from an Episcopalian friend.

There is nothing wrong in using this, its very much in line with Catholic faith.

Myself, I prefer praying with “The Liturgy of the Hours,” and “The Imitation of Christ.”

If the Lord is speaking to you through “Our Daily Bread,” continue to use it and don’t fret about it.

Other denominational devotions lack the most important piece of being in Union…The Holy Eucharist. We who receive His Body and Blood are “FAMILY,” and nothing can be closer than that.
 
I love my Magnificat. I also use Living Faith (at least I think that’s what its called), it is a Catholic Publication. I also subscribe to My Daily Visitor, put out by OSV. And I have had a subscription to The Upper Room for a while (it is put out by the Methodist Church, but they will have some Catholic writers too), I have yet to notice anything not in line with Catholic teaching.

I also subscribe to several online daily meditations through different Catholic resources. Also this website has the Lectio Divina, which is praying the scriptures. I really enjoy it. I have it bookmarked at my office computer.
