I don’t know whether or not this goes here or in moral theology so it’s a family question so I’ll post here. Has the church or independent sources saying that living together leads to marriages later that are unstable? I have no girlfriend and wouldn’t live with one out of wedlock anyway. But what is the church saying about this?

Hello,

Forgive me I do not have an answer to your question directly but have a more broader question. In this post you say you “have no girlfriend and wouldn’t live with one out of wedlock anyway”

I noticed recently in another post you posed this question (I cut-and-pasted here)

"I just wanted to ask for for being curious I have read that these condoms don’t protect you like they’ve said before. I have never and never will use one. But this comes from the church right? Or is this an independent source? "

I think that your questions are interesting ones, but perhaps you might find better discussion on another forum such as moral theology as you suggested? Typically (as I have experienced) people on the Family Life forum discuss matters and problems that they are really having and want feedback. To me it seems you are discussing matters of morality that are not real problems per-se but matters of discussion or “what-if’s”. These certainly bear discussion that’s for sure! I think you might find more openness to discussion of these hypothetical situations on the moral theology forum or other forums. God bless you and prayers for you as you try and deepen your faith life!
Thanks. I will post there for hypotheticals from now on!

Rutgers did a longitudinal study on cohabitation and did find those who live together before marriage are more likely to break up later. The National Marriage Project out of Rutgers has now moved to the University of Virginia.

The paper is Should We Live Together?: What Young Adults Need to Know about Cohabitation before Marriage, The National Marriage Project, Rutgers University

The USCCB has a website, ForYourMarriage.org which is an excellent resource.

Before I check this out is there a specific reason(s) why this is? Do you know off hand?

I think you would be better served looking into the Church’s teaching on sexuality in general. Check out the USCCB website - it probably gives many reasons.

My personal opinion is that when people decide to live together, they don’t take the vows of matrimony, nor the sacred nature of marriage, seriously so they don’t make it. As a general rule, marriage does not work without understanding that it is an institution ordained by God.

I wonder if the numbers are skewed. People who don’t cohabitate before marriage marry because they plan on marrying and living their lives together. People who do cohabitate before marriage, in my experience, usually marry in a last ditch attempt to save a relationship that is already falling apart. Which means those peope are more likely to divorce.

As a former teacher, my policy is that I don’t do your homework for you. If you want to learn, read.

Makes sense.
