Is this common for many out there? What if anything should be done besides pray?

What do you mean? Watching people who shouldn’t receive, receive nonetheless? About all you can do is pray, frankly. It happens a lot at this time of year, unfortunately. Let God sort it out. Unless the person is a loved one, and you can kindly remind them that they should not receive unless they have been to confession prior, you’re not going to be able to do anything.Is this common for many out there? What if anything should be done besides pray?

Which is why they call them the C & E people.
At the very least we can pray for them that such Catholics will be inspired or moved within to practice their Faith better by regular Church attendance.

Would it be improper for the Priest to remind people sometime prior to Communion? Then those at Mass can decide whether or not they want to receive and drink condemnation onto themselves. It would be a rather a prudent pastoral decision. It’s not a trivial matter. We are talking about the Body, Blood, Soul and divinity of Christ. Admonishing sinners is one of the chief spiritual works of mercy after all. Just my opinion, though.

Fact is, many of these people have no clue that they shouldn’t be receiving. If they are completely unaware of what their “sins” are, then they are not in a state of mortal sin.

It’s not improper, of course, but it’s rare for priests to do so during Mass. We have 2 large projection screens that remind non-Catholics and “unprepared” Catholics that they are welcome to come up for a blessing (against the norms of course) by crossing their arms over their chest. It is implied that they are not to receive, but it’s not stated flat-out, and they should be told to stay in the pews and pray for spiritual communion.
Somehow along the way, it became a question of inclusiveness instead of protecting people’s souls…

I know at the parish we normally go to for midnight mass, the priest has reminded people that if they do not attend weekly and had not gone to confession that they should not receive. Last year the two other priest came in 20 minutes before mass to say they were hearing confessions until the lines were empty (or Santa showed up, whichever came last). While they always celebrate the OF they are very orthodox. The pastor likes to joke that weird language we use on occasion is Latin and that he would continue throwing it until people stopped looking at him funny.

True. I’m thinking a group in front of us last year must have heard. One of the ladies got very agitated and the whole group of them left rather abruptly right after the homily. In charity I would like to think it was some emergency, but the fury on her face when she passed me leads me to believe father’s words struck a nerve.While we haven’t had confessions on Christmas Eve this sounds a lot like my parish. (And, in case anyone wonders, I received for quite a few years before I realized that not having been married in the Church meant my husband and I were living in sin. No one told us that.
We’re good now. At least that issue is cleared up.)

(And, in case anyone wonders, I received for quite a few years before I realized that not having been married in the Church meant my husband and I were living in sin. No one told us that.
What always worries me (and on occasion causes me not to invite the person to come with me again) are the ones who know what the Church teaches and defiantly receive anyway.
