I have a bit of a problem with Botox for cosmetic reasons (vs reasons where there is a therepeutic use). Reason being that the way they determine the potency of the toxin is something called a mouse lethality assay. They take a stock of toxin, dilute it to different strenghts, and inject each strength into a bunch of mice, and watch them for a few days to see if they die. This needs to be done for each lot of the toxin. I think each round of testing requires hundreds of mice.
Now in general I don’t have a big problem with animal testing, nor am I particularly fond of mice. But this seems a bit egregious for something to be used purely for cosmetic reasons, because it’s not a one-time deal (e.g. test once and for all whether or not this shampoo irritates rabbits’ eyes). In this case, the more people use Botox, the more that gets produced, and the more mice have to be killed just so people look a little more youthful because heaven forbid people see that you have some lines around your eyes.
I bet all the politicians who use Botox never think about this.
