I feel a little silly asking but is it common to not be heads-over-heels excited during pregnancy? I’m 19 weeks now. I was extremely excited to find out if we were having a boy or girl and was ecstatic when I found out we would be having a boy, our little Michael Blaise. Almost immediately after I found out the news about having a boy though, I started feeling a little detached and disappointed. I don’t know if it’s because I can’t feel him yet so I don’t feel very pregnant, or if it’s because I have trouble getting as much sleep as before, or secretly dreading labor, or a combination of a lot of things. For the weeks leading up to the ultrasound to find out if we were having a Faith or Michael I was constantly talking baby baby stuff and couldn’t wait to feel closer to my baby and be able to call him by his name instead of “baby” or “him or her” or “it” when I was lazy.

So I thought I would be really excited, but now I feel weird and calling my baby Michael is odd to me to say so I say baby even more than before now. Deep down I know I am excited and I still talk about baby things to keep myself motivated but I feel as if I’m not doing my pregnancy right because I’m not extremely excited anymore. I feel like the waiting game of sitting here until labor is starting to freak me out. Is there any way to feel close again or will that come when I can actually feel Michael moving inside of me, which has had me bummed about how long it takes first pregnancies to feel the baby. I feel like my husband now who is lovingly detached because he does not understand pregnancies or babies anymore than I do. XD

Don’t worry. Sounds normal to me.

It’s hard to imagine something living inside you as a real, touchable, breathing, active baby that will be yours. I had actually even convinced myself- at 6 days overdue- that I had just gotten fat, not pregnant, and there really wasn’t a baby in there after all.

Pregnancy brings on all sorts of wonderful hormone-driven emotions.

Well, I don’t know about finding out the gender, I didn’t do that with my first. We did know for our 2nd and it didn’t matter other than we could finally pick his name. I can’t remember if I called him his name when he was in utero! LOL I was so busy with his toddler brother (they were 28 mos apart) that I am not sure I paid much attention to him, until he got so big I couldn’t ignore him!

Your feelings will come and go. You will probably get a surge of excitement when your baby starts moving - it’s a very odd, yet amazing sensation and you will probably know immediately what it is. Your hubby cannot feel your pregnancy from the inside, so he’s never going to know just what it is like. That is for us mommies alone to experience.

Just take today as it is. If you are not sick to your stomach, enjoy it!! Have a normal life with your husband, while you can (KWIM?). Go out on dates, do stuff together b/c once the baby does arrive, you will change magically into Mommy and Daddy and that will last for at least 18 more years!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Now THAT is one I had never heard!

:rotfl::rotfl:

I guess so! Both of mine came on their due dates, I was lucky!
Lucky! So far three of mine have been overdue, but 6 days was the longest. My toddler came on her due date. I am due in a few weeks and I am hoping not to go overdue again. It stinks.

That is really rare to have BOTH your kids come on your due date. When my youngest came on her due date they told me something like less than 5% of babies are born on their due dates.

Your moods can be all over, the smell of any particular thing could make you either nauseated or ravenously hungry, total strangers may feel free to touch your belly or launch into labor and birth horror stories without any solicitation from you, your feet might or might not swell up, your doctor or nurse may refer to your unexplained memory lapses as “prego-heimers”…

Some women are excited for the entire 9 months, but let’s say that they are the exception.

Seriously, you may not even be excited when the baby is actually born. Emotions have so much to do with your physical state, and your physical state will be one of high demand on your body and an unusual amount of hormonal flux. You can do it, do not worry about that, but it will be easier on you if you don’t put any expectations on what it will feel like or is “supposed to” feel like as you are going through it. In pregnancy and even after childbirth, normal has a huge range!

I wouldn’t worry about it; you aren’t too far along yet. Once Michael Blaise starts bouncing around in there, you will feel better about him being on the way and the day he actually arrives will be amazing. You won’t like being in labor, but once it’s all over you will forget about and get on with being a wonderful MOM.

Thanks for the quick replies. I feel a little better now. My husband is honestly glad I’m going through an ‘excitement slump’ so he doesn’t feel like the bad guy. ;p I feel like I got jipped with my hormones in pregnancy though. From everything I’ve read sex drive was supposed to increase(we were both looking forward to that), overall better feelings, “pregnancy glow” but instead we have waaay less sex than before I found out. I just have a hard time “wanting” or being interested in sex now for no particular reason, just feel eh about it. And my glow turned into acne instead so I now use a medicine that makes my face smell funny at night and my husband makes fun of me for it  I regret reading every single thing I read about pregnancy! I feel so cheated lol.

Thanks again for responses. I’m just waiting for him to get on out so I can play with him. (I’ve also never held a baby or been around a baby for more than 20 minutes before either so I the maternal instinct hormones better work with me because I’m scared I’ll do something wrong with the baby!) How is everyone so confident with their first babies!!??

Everyone is different. My 2nd trimester was great - not big enough to be awkward and uncomfortable, done with the morning (all day) sickness. That is when all the sexy stuff happened! But not everyone gets that way. It just varies.

Yeah I got acne too, that sucked. I was surprised about that. 😦

As for feeling confident…I don’t know how it works. I just changed from a woman into a mom, while giving birth to my first son. You will love him so much and do stuff you never knew you could. You’ll see, it’ll all be fine!

I hope you feel better day by day.

Where did you get the idea that they were? You get thrown into the lake, you swim because drowning is a bad alternative, and pretty soon you consider yourself a swimmer! 👍

My advice is go to concerts and movies while you still can, if you like that kind of thing…that is, before you get to 6 months or so and can’t sit for very long and fall asleep easily. My OB/GYN suggested that, and he was absolutely right!

And read some good books on parenting babies. The Baby Book by Dr. Sears comes to mind.

Man, if I knew anyone who was excited about their pregnancy for 24 hours a day of all nine blessed months of it, I’d wonder what the heck was wrong. That level of chirpiness just ain’t natural.

I honestly don’t enjoy being pregnant AT ALL. There are small moments, like when the baby first moves when I get excited, but it dies down literally half an hour later. I don’t get the pregnant glow–I get acne like no tomorrow and the rest of my skin gets so dry that it resembles snake skin. My hair actually thins while I’m pregnant. My eyesight suffers and doesn’t usually return until I wean my baby. My sex drive plummets the moment I get pregnant–that’s usually what tips me off that I need to take a pregnancy test, I just have no interest in sex at all and it takes A LOT to convince me otherwise. I can sit on my butt all day, or I can focus on healthy mealplans and a good exercise regime–I still gain 50 pounds even though I’m only 5’2". During the third trimester my whole body gets so swollen that it hurts to walk. Pregnancy really does affect every body differently. I’ve begun to see it as something of a spiritual exercise for me: every time that I find something to complain about, I will instead offer it up. Or I’ll ask Mother Mary for the strength to continue on, since she knows what it’s like to carry a child. 🙂 It’s made this current pregnancy so much more pleasant. I actually enjoyed a good portion of my second trimester this time around.

And honestly, not many people feel very confident with a first baby. Instincts help out a lot. You’ll do something that just feels natural to you without even thinking about it. Then you’ll think “where did I learn that?” I had never held a newborn before my first baby was born; I had NO idea what I was going to do or how I was going to care for him. But when he came along, I just started taking care of him one day at a time, and suddenly he became a little boy instead of a baby! You can do it! If you’re nervous about it, check out some parenting books from the library, talk to other young mothers (there’s usually a mom’s group at church) or go for a walk in the park and observe other parents with their children. Thankfully, babies don’t come out of the womb capable of climbing everything in sight. 😉 They do require quick adjustments, and sometimes you’ll just have to “wing it” and learn on your feet, but you’ll do just fine.
